If you saw my article from Friday night of Canadian Music Week, then you might remember that I was a little enthusiastic about a band called Arkells who put on an amazing set at The Horseshoe that night. Honestly, I consider them the "find" of Canadian Music Week, even more so now than before because I've been listening to their EP Deadlines regularly since then. So early last week I discovered they were going to be opening for a band called Sweet Thing at The Mod Club, and I didn't want to miss the opportunity.

Arkells

The Arkells are more about being musicians than stage performers, but don't think I'm saying they're boring... that's not what I mean. Instead, I'm trying to tell you that when you go see the Arkells, what you get is honest musical passion and amazing Canadian rock without any pretension. This band played a fueled set of songs that was exactly what I needed to after coming down from my Constantines-high last week, giving me a boost back up to that same level of absorbed energy.

The vocal power of Max Kerman (lead vocals, guitar) is a notable force, and when he and the rest of the band start to rock out, the timing and power come together in ways that are exactly what I look for in music. Kerman along with Nik Dika on bass, Mike DeAngelis on guitar, Tim Oxford on drums, and Dan Griffin on keyboards create something that should not be ignored. And if you live West of Ontario, you'll have some good opportunities to not ignore them for the remainder of May as they head out on tour. They're on their way to Winnipeg as I write this, and then passing through many cities and towns (sometimes twice) in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Check their schedule on MySpace, get out there, and be sure to buy their EP after the show – in terms of pure-rock-pleasure per dollar, it's one of the best deals going.

Sweet Thing

The truth is that I had never heard of Sweet Thing until I discovered that the Arkells were opening for them, which isn't that unusual... it's just that they are a Toronto-based band. It's eye-opening because even though I try to pay close attention to the local music scene, it's clear that there is still so much I miss. But being there is often how I find out about new bands. And there I was. The band is led by Owen Carrier (vocals) whose introduction on their MySpace and Facebook pages says this: Question: do you like your hands? If yes, then you better get your mammy to knit you some mitts you baby, because lead singer Owen Carrier will make you clap, hard. His showmanship is noticeable from the start, and he is definitely responsible for quite a bit of the band's stage appeal.

I discovered through a friend at the show that the drummer, Tyler Kyte, also has an acting career that started on Popular Mechanics for Kids (working with Elisha Cuthbert) and continues with a starring role in the show Instant Star. And through that I learned that Morgan Waters (bass) also does a little work on TV with a 6 minute sketch comedy show called, The Morgan Waters Show, to which both Tyler and Owen have contributed (see them in Bear Assets, Tyler is the bear, Owen gets mauled by the bear near the end). Anyway, put this together with Nick Rose (guitar) and Alex Last (guitar) and you've got a band that is skilled not only in music but also comfortable on stage. They've recently signed with EMI, so expect to see more of them in the near future.

Hey are you going to check out City and Colour at the Roger's Picnic this summer?
