With everyone in the music industry sleeping in from a late Saturday night out, and then preparing for the Junos, Sunday at The Artist Sanctuary was quite a bit slower. We still had a fair number of people drop by, including Monika Deol, the incredibly cute Nina Dobrev and Kayla Ewell, and bands Beast, The Trews (who put on a great performance at the Granville St. tent on Friday night), Protest The Hero, Hey Ocean!, and the Arkells. And through it all, we all had a great time closing up the place while BlondTron & Kay (pictured above) helped us keep the mood going right to the end.
In terms of the performances, the Arkells' Max Kerman (vocals, guitar) and Dan Griffin (usually keyboards) played a short acoustic set while Mike DeAngelis (guitar) played a little Rock Band 2. Hey Ocean! also played a set with the percussionist using a guitar case and a fork as his drum kit. And a local Vancouver band that, prior to The Artist Sanctuary, was known as Critical Element had started searching for a new name. Between cocktails, they ran a couple of ideas past George Stroumboulopoulos and Rick Campinelli, and I think they've settled on Goodbye Beatdown. The band includes bassist Mark Luongo, who previously played with Daniel Wesley, and watching how front-man Dustin Overhill (vocals) performed in a toned-down environment, I get the sense their live performances will be out of control.
