I read an article recently that postulated that the buzz around a band is not generated by the quality of their music, but instead it's related to other factors such as number of MySpace friends, connections, and blogger love (among other things). In some ways the author is right, but if Attack In Black is any indication, the quality of their stage show and music are most likely causing the other factors to occur. Currently with just under 8,500 MySpace friends, and connections such as Dallas Green and Moneen (who were both billed as Surprise Special Guests), all that's left is blogger love. And just in case they haven't had enough of that recently, let me contribute.

When I arrived at The Horseshoe, it was the first time on a Tuesday that I was concerned I wouldn't get in, and the venue was packed straight through until Attack In Black finished their set at around 1:30 AM; the busiest I've seen that place on any Tuesday since I started doing this. Sadly, I missed Dallas Green's set, but did get there in time to see Moneen and Walter Schreifels successfully warm up the crowd. Yes, I've been hearing lots of buzz around Attack In Black, and have listened to a few clips of music on their MySpace page, but just wasn't motivated enough to get out and see them. They even opened when I went to see Built To Spill, and I probably should've got my lazy self out a little earlier, but I just didn't make it there in time to catch their set. But, in a way, I'm happy I was first exposed to Attack In Black at their CD release party at The Horseshoe, because it was exactly the right venue and set of circumstances for the introduction.

They played the set with a moderate amount of sincere energy, not over the top, and played well. For a few of the songs they brought out "special guests" that turned out to be family members to play the saxophone, trumpet, and to act as backup singers (for photos, see the full set). It was a very cool moment. Close to the end of the set Dallas Green could be seen just off-stage singing along with the songs. I really didn't know any of their music beforehand, but easily got hooked into the last few songs of the set: The Love Between You And I, If All I Thought Were True, and Young Leaves. Daniel Romano (guitar / vocals) remarked that this was the "strangest night" of their lives due to line-up and the fact they were headlining rather than opening. The line-up may not stay the same, but I suspect he'll have plenty of opportunities to get used to being the headliner over the coming years.

I feel like a bit of a fool not purchasing their CD, Marriage, at the actual CD release party, but hopefully I made up for it to some extent by heading out today at lunchtime and adding to the sales numbers. I'm listening to it now, and it is already reminding me of the show.

Moneen

With everyone else near the stage singing along with many of the songs from Moneen, I felt a little out of touch. I've heard the name before, but that's it. Who is this band, and why don't I know any of their music? Whatever, their set was excellent, so I'll fix that immediately (I see their music is available from eMusic.com). I'm not sure where they usually play, but the lead singer mentioned they haven't played at The Horseshoe for about 5 years. Great set.

Walter Schreifels

Schreifels opened his solo-on-guitar set with We Are The World, which I suspect was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, but I'm telling you he did it with a completely straight face. However, he projected lots of humour throughout the rest of his set. Good fun.
