BIGIDEAS is a local Toronto band that plays music I would describe as Adult Alternative, with good song structure and vocals. I ran into them for the first time back in January, when I went to see Vacuity and Tin Bangs (for the first time). That was a long night, so I only snapped a few shots of BIGIDEAS at the time - photos that I never published. I had meant to get out and see them again, but a few months later I was unable to remember the band name and didn't write it down. Fortunately for me, Bob Mills (vocals, keyboards) contacted me via MySpace not too long after that, and the connection was made again.

BIGIDEAS

Mills definitely anchors the band with the strength of his piano and vocals, but it's worth tuning your ear to Daniel Truderung (guitars), who is responsible for the licks that pull the songs forward. And over the year the band seems to have developed a fuller, tighter, more upbeat sound. Mills mentioned that they are in the middle of recording a new album, and from what I could hear, some of the new material has more depth and is a little louder than their currently recorded tracks. Even the previously recorded tracks sounded a little faster and/or louder on stage.

There was a point where it sounded like Mills' voice had been a little overworked recently, but it was short-lived and he seemed to be back in form for the final two songs Almost and Bullets. I've always thought Almost was their strongest song, but I have to admit that Bullets was definitely the better closer. I think some of the guitar work was a little different than in the recorded version on MySpace, so the song came across with more power.

Drew Smith

Opening the night was Drew Smith, a singer/songwriter from Hamilton who played on stage with one other guitarist. His vocals remind me of cross between Dallas Green solo as City And Colour and Tom Yorke from Radiohead. Not a bad mixture. Even the music reminded me a bit of City And Colour at the time due to the lack of bass and drums, but the songs on his MySpace are recorded with additional instrumentation making them sound different than I remembered. He's playing at C'est What next Saturday, which is probably worth checking out... C'est What has one of the best on-tap beer selections in Toronto (including a real ale from Wellington), so the music always sounds great there.
