This is the second time I've been to see Birds Of Wales; the first time was at The Opera House opening for Mariana's Trench. At the time, I didn't really know any of their material, but since then I've acquired their CD and it's one of those albums that has enough good songs, you find yourself listening to it every now and then. So this time around I knew their recorded songs and was able to mentally compare them to their stage show versions. The CD is mellow, indie folk-rock with gentle, clean vocals from Morgan Ross (vocals, guitar). On stage, the songs are the same compositionally, but with the right amount of bonus energy added in.

The band was originally scheduled to take the stage at 11 PM, but went on about 20 minutes early to accommodate the schedule of a videographer from MuchMusic. I'm guessing MuchMusic was there and interested in getting some footage due to the fact that Ross was recently featured on the channel, voted the #3 hottest Canadian artist. And apparently combining a talented band with a hot male lead singer translates into an audience with a much higher than normal female attendance percentage, all with their own hotness factor that is impossible to ignore.

Although I'm sure there was room for plenty more people, this was the most crowded I've seen Tattoo Rock Parlour out of the three times I've been there, and was definitely a good pull for a Wednesday night. The Birds played a very tight set that sounded excellent. Morgan is a comfortable leader, projecting experience both musically and with his style of casual banter between songs. The fairly full set was followed-up by two well deserved encores.
