I've seen Patrick Krief perform a few times, and it's always good, but when he's really on, it can be pretty amazing. Apparently the set at the El Mocambo during NXNE under the new band name Black Diamond Bay was excellent. I missed that show, but they played later in June at The Horseshoe, and it seemed like a good time for another dose of his music. The other thing that got me out is that Dave Bidini (previously of the Rheostatics) was scheduled to close the night, and I figured it would be good to hear what he's been up to.

Black Diamond Bay

Incorrectly billed as the Black Diamond Boys, there were a few people asking Krief if that was right, so as soon as he got on stage he cleared it up for us: Black Diamond Bay. I didn't ask, but I'm sure they took their band name from a Bob Dylan song of the same name, which is an appropriate nod to some of his influences. Patrick Krief (vocals, guitar) along with Andre Bendahan (Bass), Roberto Piccioni (Keyboards), and George Donoso III (Drums) put on a show that started out fairly gentle and mellow, but through a series of build-ups, the set ended with Krief abusing his white Fender Stratocaster in a similar style to some of the great Stratocaster players of the past. It can be pretty wild to watch.

Dave Bidini

Dave Bidini was joined on stage by Don Kerr on drums and Paul Linklater (from Scribbled Out Man) on guitar, as well as a bass player that I think I recognized but his name escapes me right now. The show was very Bidini, if you're cool with me using his last name as an adjective. Linklater's style of guitar playing fits in perfectly with Bidini's music. They played this one song with lyrics that were about how bad the song was, and although I will agree wholeheartedly that the lyrics were exactly as advertised, the music for that song stood out, leaving me with a conflicted feeling.
