Festivals have too many options. So many bands roll into town, all at the same time, which means I end up missing bands that I would otherwise love to see. Like last year, the biggest conflict during Canadian MusicFest '09 (apparently a separate name has been given to the festival portion of CMW) is on Saturday when The Indies draw media and photographers away from all the great bands out in the venues. My schedule is already partially set out for me this week because I've (happily) been hired to cover a few events. But you, you should grab yourself a wristband and hop from event to event like a happy-go-lucky fan. Or, another good strategy is to pick a good venue each night and stick there. My picks below are basically "things I know", but there are heaps of bands on the schedule that I don't know. And I'm willing to bet I've omitted some really worthwhile stuff, so please leave a comment with your recommendations (my stupid CAPTCHA thing is case-sensitive, so don't forget to hit the Shift key when entering it). And hey, it's always good to see a few bands you've never heard of before, so pick something you want to see and then either get there early for the band just before, or stay for the band afterwards. Wednesday, March 11thThings are just getting started on Wednesday. If you're looking for a good warm-up night, Tattoo Rock Parlor is hosting a kick-off party, or maybe spend it at the Rancho Relaxo to check out Revival Dear. Also, Zeus and Sloan and The MOD Club should be excellent.
Thursday, March 12thIf I just wanted to stick at one place on Thursday, it would be Lee's Palace. On the other hand, I've really been wanting to see The Details, but always seem to miss them when they are in town (sadly, this time will be no exception). I'm kind of hoping that one of you other photographers will head out to Rancho Relaxo for their set so I can see what I missed.
Friday, March 13thIf I had to pick one location to be at on Friday night, it would be a toss-up between The Horseshoe Tavern and Rancho Relaxo. They both have great line-ups. I may try to hit both venues for late-night sets after the illScarlett show. Be prepared for both of these venues to be packed-out.
Saturday, March 14thSaturday night at The Horseshoe is a safe bet for most festivals, and CMW 2009 is no different. I've included three picks below, but the whole line-up looks worthwhile.
