Canadian Music Week '09 - Wednesday
Sloan, Songs From A Room, Inward Eye
Toronto, Ontario on March 11, 2009
Full Photo Set (20 photos)
Canadian Music Week is really only just getting started on Wednesday. Bands are still arriving in town, but a few venues run kick-off parties. My plan was to take it easy and just head out to The MOD Club to see Sloan with opening bands Will Curry and the Country French and Zeus. It didn't go quite according to plan, but I can't complain because it turned out to be a great opening night anyway.
SloanThe Sloan show, despite being part of CMW, required that media go through a separate process for photo passes. No problem, I'm used to that, but the result wasn't quite what I expected: I couldn't get in for either of the opening bands, and although I got in to photograph Sloan, I was only permitted to stay in the venue for the first three songs. But hey, this is Sloan we're talking about (nine studio albums, all in my collection) so I was happy to be there at all, even if only for three songs. They opened with Penpals, worked through an excellent rendition of Losing California, and then from their latest album Parallel Play was All I Am Is All You're Not. After I left, the set list showed they played four more songs in a row from Parallel Play before getting back to some older material. Since the band members of Sloan are known for switching around instruments, I assumed the lines on the set list indicated swap points, of which there were four. The set was a satisfying 22 songs long, including The Good In Everyone, Everything You've Done Wrong, People In The Sky, Believe In Me (I could go on, but won't) and closing with Money City Maniacs.

Songs From A RoomAlthough I would've loved to have been able to stay and see the entire Sloan show, it wasn't all that bad having to leave because I knew there was a CMW Kick-Off Party happening at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. When I arrived, Songs From A Room were still on stage, screaming their way through songs from their recently released self-titled EP. I've listened to the EP a few times, and now that I know the music a better, it was good getting to see them rifle through songs like Revival and We Are The Ones.

Inward EyeI hadn't actually planned to be at Inward Eye on Wednesday because I knew that I was going to be photographing them on Thursday night, but I was already there, so I stuck around to watch them play as sort of a preview for Thursday. I saw them briefly during CMW last year, and even though I only saw a few songs then, it was obvious they've come a long way since last year. Their sound is based on some of the great punk rock bands of years past. And some of their moves may have been learned by watching old videos of Pete Townsend, although everything Inward Eye does is delivered with a sharp edge. Frenetic performers who make loud, catchy punk-rock.
