I will admit that the first Kaiser Chiefs' album, Employment, came and went through my collection - it did not stay. I won't go into details, but the summary is that despite the fact that it had a couple of hooks, there was an influence there that was just too overpowering for me. And although their second album, Yours Truly Angry Mob, is roughly based on the same formula, the songwriting is a little more developed, and the album has a richer, more distinct feel to it. And so even though I only enjoyed about half of their set on Wednesday, I can tell you that they know how to get a crowd bouncing.

Given that Ruby is their big radio hit in Toronto at the moment, I was a little surprised hear it played so early in the set - it was the 4th song. But they saved some of their other good material until later, including The Angry Mob. Ricky Wilson has tons of energy that transferred to a fairly large portion of the crowd who were jumping wildly with hands in the air for quite a few songs. Ricky also has a passion for holding the mic stand out over the audience encouraging them to sing along. A highlight of the show was when he let himself down on the hands of the fans and crowd surfed all the way out to near the mixing panel and back.

The show reminded me of a few concerts from my youth with all the skinny jeans, attitude, and lyrics intended to incite anarchy. And I was clearly not the only one there old enough to remember these sorts of concerts. I guess that's part of their draw, but it is also part of what pushes me away. Either way, it was a respectable show by a band that is still defining itself.
