Dead Meadow is originally from Washington D.C., formed in 1998, and is currently a three-piece band... although they did expand to a four-piece for at least one album (Feathers). Their self-titled debut album was released in 2000 is the CD responsible for catching my attention, mostly due to the guitar-centric track Greensky Greenlake, which has a bit of a creepy feel to it and reminds me of some earlier Pink Floyd, in a way. I now own three of their CDs, including their latest album, Old Growth, which was just released in February. Their songs come up on my iPod every now and then, always at exactly the right time, like my iPod can tell what mood I'm in.

A bottle of Jim Beam took centre-stage for the start of the concert, which was a bit of a surprise because I didn't really think alcohol was the drug of choice for this band or their fans. But you know what they say about alcohol, it's the gateway drug. Or is that caffeine? I can never remember. Anyway, the band didn't overdo it with the drinks on stage. They would take a swig from the bottle here and there, but were mostly focused on pumping out their driving rock much like they do on the albums, but with extensions and additional guitar work.

Steve Kille (bass) was definitely most active on stage, regularly keeping the beat to these stoner rock songs by jumping up and down. Stephen McCarty on the drum-kit was a trip back to the 70's with his flowing hair and bushy side-burns, along with his smooth stick-work. And Jason Simon (guitar, vocals) is the real force behind it all, anchoring their compositions with his wailing Fender Telecaster.
