I was only a month ago I saw Dearly Beloved, it was on the Friday night of Canadian Music Week, just days before they released their new album Repo Repo Repo. I had a great time during that set, so I was keen to get out and see Dearly Beloved play again. The opportunity arose with a night at Healey's along with the band Mink, another band I previously photographed when they opened for Perry Farrell's Satellite Party.

Dearly Beloved

As I mentioned in my CMW article, alcohol was definitely a factor in the crowd during the set at Tattoo, but the mood at Healey's was a little more subdued, with the crowd forming a semi-circle rather that right up at the stage. Dearly Beloved played through their set well, with all the right moves, but it just didn't have quite the same impact. Don't get me wrong, there were still people dancing along and lots of smiles, but but no one was out of control with rock fever like at the Tattoo. And there were also people sitting at tables just enjoying the show, which is partly due to the setup at Healey's. I really think Dearly Beloved has a hit in their bass-heavy and extremely catchy tune Candy Coated which they played 2nd in the order. I'd love to see them move that one closer to the end of the set once it has had a little more stage time. I'll be checking in with them again later this year, and I still recommend that you do too.

Is it just me, or does Rob Higgins (vocals, bass) look like Dave Grohl in the bottom-left photo?

Mink

There were a few changes to Mink since the last time I saw them August '07. For one, there were only four people on stage rather than the five that were there previously. Not sure if that's a permanent change, but worth note. The other thing was that Neal Carlson (vocals, guitar) has partially changed his look, which sort of changed the way his stage persona comes across. Last time, he was sort of like a young Jim Morrison in really skinny jeans, but this time he looked more like a dark-haired version of Flock Of Seagulls, in really skinny jeans. (Okay, that's not really a fair comparison... I'm sure Neal doesn't use hairspray, but writing that made me laugh). From what I saw, they did a decent job. Check out the song Talk To Me available for listening on their websites for an idea what they're capable of.
