In the past, the Edge Next Big Thing Concert Series has hosted bands such as illScarlett, Tokyo Police Club, Kaiser Chiefs, Athlete, Blue October, and Bedouin Soundclash, among many others. The latest show was held at Tattoo Rock Parlour and featured Die Mannequin, a band that has been gaining fans over the past few years, and is now set to release their debut full-length CD on March 4th entitled Unicorn Steak. The album is the combination of their two existing EPs, How To Kill (2006) and Slaughter Daughter (2007), plus new material.

Die Mannequin

Although this performance by Care Failure (vocals, guitar), Anthony "Useless" Bleed (bass), and Ghostwolf (drums) was toned-down slightly from when I saw them perform last year at NXNE, it doesn't mean that it didn't scream rock 'n' rock from start to finish. The antics included Care throwing down her mic stand a few times throughout the show before launching it into the audience during the final number, propping her foot up on an audience member near the front, playing some slide guitar on top of the speaker stack with a full beer glass and just dropping it (accidentally?) when she was done, lying on the floor among the audience while playing her guitar, letting/making an audience member strum her guitar with their face and/or tongue, all among other general mayhem. Some of this may sound contrived, but when you're there in the moment with Care and the band, it doesn't seem that way. It's just high-energy insanity and it's hard not to get into it.

But there's something else to all this because it's not just the antics that make the show. The music is both raw and catchy, and Care's vocals are thick and powerful, yet with a clean edge. In truth, the first song of the set, The Other Tiffany, was a little rough, but it seemed that one song was all they needed to warm up because once they launched into Lonely Of A Woman, it all seemed to come together in that certain way that only this trio can pull off. Watch for Die Mannequin touring with Sum 41 this March, with the tour closing up in Toronto on March 27th at the Koolhaus (after which they're heading to Europe for a tour in April).

Revolution Love

Not only did Care Failure from Die Mannequin introduce Revolution Love, she spent most of the set out in the front row out rocking to the band.
