Having just recently signed a deal with Universal Motown Records, Down With Webster, who have been pumping out a stream of new demo songs, held a celebratory concert at The Opera House. A balcony full of business related people were there to see the band in action, but like any good show, it's not just about the band, it's about how the band and the fans work together to create a good time.
However, conspicuously absent from this show were the colours that the band members normally wear to create a unique visual feel. At past shows, there has always been bright red, yellow, green, and blue filling my photos, but not this time. Also, I would be lying if I said I didn't miss Kap's signature koala backpack, replaced for this show by a plain white backpack. Not sure if this a record-label induced change, or just the band changing their branding as they grow. Either way, the colours were missed.
Visual changes aside, the band was as strong as ever, working the all-ages crowd up into a frenzy of crowd surfing and stage diving. They spread a number of the fan favourites throughout the set-list, including Time To Win, Miracle Mile, The Grind, and closed the proper set with their killer rock/hip-hop cover of Rich Girl (originally by Hall & Oates) before returning for a three song encore that included Back Of My Hand, a personal favourite. The flow of crowd-surfing fans visiting the stage continued throughout the entire show.
It will be interesting to see how this band evolves now that they have a record deal. They've been together for over 10 years already, forming back in the late 90's during high-school. I saw them for the first time playing on Queen St. East during the Beaches Jazz Festival, and still own the 13-song CD I purchased from them that night. I can't say I listen to a lot of music like Down With Webster, but with they way they blend genres there's no denying the good music and good times when you're there. It's definitely time to win.
