Having recently signed with Universal Motown, Down With Webster didn't waste much time getting a recording completed. The release of Time To Win Vol. 1 marks a pretty big step in for this young hip-hop/rock band from the Beaches area of Toronto, and it also was as good a reason as any to hold another hometown show. The album contains only 7 songs, but I think the inclusion of "Vol. 1"in the title hints pretty strongly toward a follow-up, very possibly to be sold as a set or as one full-length CD.
The Phoenix was packed for this show, all the young fans jammed up against the barriers at the front, and just about everyone over the drinking age in the licensed back area. Even though there are only 7 tracks on the album, the set list was a full 15 songs with an extra 3 songs in the encore. I can't say I like every song, but watching these guys perform is always awesome. Best of the bunch are The Grind, Back Of My Hand, Miracle Mile, and their current radio hit Rich Girl (a cover of the Hall & Oates song that they've completely owned).
Because of some of the lyrics in the title track, Time To Win, the band has managed to associate themselves with red plastic cups of which many fans had with them at the show. Although it is Time To Win that has become a bit of an anthem for the band, it is Back Of My Hand that has become my current favorite of theirs; the main reason being that when they perform that song, it's just... amazing. I don't listen to (or photograph) a lot of bands in this genre, but this band puts it together in a way that will force people to reconsider their musical boundaries.
