It's no secret that Gene Simmons has been in Toronto recently, scouting bands for the relaunch of his record label Simmons Records (in conjunction with Universal). Last week he was out taking over various venues in the early evening to view band showcases specifically for this purpose. I hear that the showcase with Down With Webster went well, and it has been reported that he is looking to sign them on. I was out early in the evening at the Tattoo Rock Parlour to see the showcase by Paper Lions and Bleeker Ridge.
Apparently, Simmons is planning on signing three Canadian acts per year, in an all-inclusive "360-degree" deal that includes the record label in publishing, licensing, merchandising, and touring, as well as product placement and television revenues. The bands that are signed to the label will also take part in a Canadian-made reality TV series that follows the bands through the making of their albums and while they are out on tour.

Paper LionsPaper Lions brought out their most rocking material for the short showcase they played for Gene Simmons. This set reminded more of when I saw them at Virgin Festival than when I saw them open for Cake, and they definitely blew away their recorded material. Pretty spectacular. The lead photo of this article is Gene Simmons talking with David Cyrus MacDonald, drummer for Paper Lions after their set. He spoke to the band for quite a while, mostly about music but also briefly about marriage, oddly enough.
