There's always something going on at The Horseshoe on Friday, so I ended up there last week with a group of friends, not only because of the band Hello Beautiful that I've been meaning to get out and see for many months now, but also because two other bands that I'm familiar with were scheduled to play: Trophy and BIGIDEAS, along with one other band I hadn't heard of before called The Hollows.

Hello Beautiful

Kicking off the night was Hello Beautiful, winners of the 2007 Toronto Indie Week competition (which is how I first heard of them). Their combination of punk, hip-hop, and rock comes together amazingly well, especially in the incredibly catchy song Saint Andrews Bridge. Cole Martin's active guitar playing and expressive vocals both contrast and compliment the hip-hop style of Charlie Royal. Although Saint Andrews Bridge was the most immediately likable song in the set, there were at least a few others that sounded radio-friendly, with hit potential.

The Hollows

With the unique look of having both Stephen Court (bass) and David Brown (vocals, guitar) playing left-handed, The Hollows pump out alt-rock with a few big 70's guitar riffs acting as the base. For a taste of what I mean, head over to their MySpace page and have a listen to Hammer Song. You can be sure there was some shredding on stage by lead guitarist Coz Costa.

BIGIDEAS

I recently caught BIGIDEAS at the El Mocambo, and although there were some rough patches, the set ended strongly with the two songs Almost and Bullets. I can't quite remember if the order was the same this time at The Horseshoe, but the set was similar in its development, with a good start, a few rough patches in the middle, and a solid finish with the same two songs... it's those two last songs that make the set.

Trophy

This is now the third time I've been out to see Trophy. Always a good show, even (especially?) when it's late at night, and everyone has had a little too much to drink. Ask my friends if they liked the set, and their response will probably be something like: Was that before or after the Irish Whiskey?
