After seeing Hey Rosetta! put on one of the best shows I've seen this year at The Horseshoe on November 19th, I was looking forward to seeing another show sometime, but with their schedule taking them to Australia in January, I didn't expect to see them performing in Toronto again until maybe February at the earliest. However, the Third Estate, a music merchandising company, decided to host a holiday party last week, with both Dinosaur Bones and Hey Rosetta! playing for the attendees, providing me with one more opportunity to see Hey Rosetta! perform before year end.
Hey Rosetta! The poor sound guy at Rivoli was having a terrible night, and issues with the setup delayed the Third Estate from opening up the back room on time. Eventually, it seemed that whatever problems they were having got sorted out and the party started, but in reality the sound issues never really got fully resolved. At one point, some cables got replaced mid-song, which did correct one of the problems, but some monitor speakers weren't working right making it difficult for the band to hear what they were playing, and other issues caused one of the songs in the set to missed. As a result, even though there were more than a few good moments, Hey Rosetta! never really hit stride.
I think it was Rajiv Thavanathan (from Oh No Forest Fires) that brought the band some shots, and one by one as they downed the liquid, each one made a grimace. Not sure what it was, but clearly it was harsh. About a song later, those shots seemed to take effect and loosen up the band, but it was too late by that point for them to really pull it together. Despite all the distractions, it was cool getting to see Hey Rosetta! again, especially since I've been listening to their CD Into Your Lungs pretty much on repeat since mid-November. Such amazingly great material.
Tim Baker (vocals, guitar, keyboards) said the band was hanging out in Toronto for the Neil Young/Wilco show later in the week. I think Hey Rosetta! would've fit perfectly into that line-up. I know they were going only as spectators, not performers, but I seriously would not have been surprised if Tim had told me they were going to be there to open the night. Maybe next time?

Dinosaur BonesOnce again I found myself enjoying a set by Dinosaur Bones, but something was different. I couldn't quite figure it out. The band played great versions of N.Y.E. and Royalty, just like every time I see them. So what was different? Wait, wait, I know: Since this was an industry event, the stage wasn't swarmed with fans the minute they started playing, and there wasn't the usual group of photographers buzzing around. Even so, lots of people did move right up to the stage, including a few members of Black Hat Brigade that were there. I know that for many people at the party, this was the first time they had even heard of Dinosaur Bones, but when I spoke to a couple of them after the set, the feedback was positive.
