Hollerado, Dinosaur Bones
Sneaky Dee's in Toronto, Ontario on February 12, 2009
Full Photo Set (10 photos)
For the late half of last Thursday evening, I went to Sneaky Dee's in the hopes of catching a bit of Dinosaur Bones and the entire Hollerado set. I've seen Dinosaur Bones a few times now and always have a good time at their shows, but only really learned about Hollerado at the XM Holiday Party in December. I took home their Demo in A Bag EP, which got me hooked on the song Americanarama. This month they are touring, and playing every single night in February in what they call the Residency Tour.
Dinosaur BonesBefore I blather on about Hollerado, let me just cover the 2 minutes of Dinosaur Bones I got to see. I arrived just in time to catch the best part of a Dinosaur Bones set: The all out on-stage fan/band frenzy they called N.Y.E. They had clearly worked the crowd up into a lather before I arrived, and were already part way into the song. A good number of friends and fans had joined them on stage, and all together, they partied through the brilliant and catchy tune. I had obviously missed the build-up to that song, but I had no problem getting into the spirit of the performance. I only had time to take a few photos, but luckily managed to capture the one above; sorry, no more photos this time around. If you want to see more, check out my photo sets from September, October, and December last year (and there are more on this site too, if you feel like searching).

HolleradoOkay, so let me say this: Yay Hollerado! This band has turned me from ignorant basement-dwelling music blogger into an ignorant basement-dwelling music blogging fan of Hollerado. (See how that works?) If I was forced, I would guess that these guys spent some good time listening to Weezer in their past. I can't really say they sound like Weezer, it's more their attitude. And because of their fairly insane February schedule, they're taking their Weezeresque attitude from Boston to New York to Lacolle to Hamilton to Toronto to Ottawa to Montreal, and then repeating the whole thing four times. In fact, as I write these words, they're preparing for their 3rd show at Sneaky Dee's this month. If it ends up anything like last week, it will be a huge pile of rock 'n' roll fun.
Last chance to see them as part of the Residency in Toronto is next Thursday, February 26th, although it looks like they'll be back in Sneaky Dee's on March 13th for CMW. It's worth going to see their performances of Fake Drugs, Juliette, Do The Doot Da Doot Doo, and Americanarama. Every time I hear the latter, I can't help but think of the Americanarama video in which Dave Foley plays a part; I keep meaning to ask Menno Versteeg (vocals, guitar) about how that came to be. They recently released a new album entitled Record In A Bag, a collection of songs that they really really want you to hear, which explains why you can download the entire album in high-quality MP3s from their site right now. Download, listen, and like their tour schedule, repeat (well, except the download part).
