For five shows in Canada, illScarlett is the opening band for Avril Lavigne. The kick-off for this small tour started in Toronto at the Molson Amphitheatre and then headed out East to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

illScarlett

Here's a little story about illScarlett from Wednesday night: As the band was preparing to go on, I was lingering in the space between the fans and the stage that photographers call "the pit". One of the security guards tells me he's heard that illScarlett gets a lot of crowd surfers. I tell him it's true, but I'm used to it. But he was clearly more concerned about what was going to happen during the set, and so asks me if I think we'll be getting many surfers tonight. I hadn't really thought about it, but before the conversation, I'd wandered around a little and was able to look out into the crowd from stage. It was a young crowd, with a noticeable number of kids with parents (more than any other concert I've been to recently), and although some of them were likely illScarlett fans as well, it was obvious they were there to see Avril Lavigne. After short consideration, I replied "Nah, I don't think we're going to see any tonight". Although I ended up being right, I'll admit I was surprised that I didn't even see Ronan McKerr (friend, fan) come sailing over the crowd. On the other hand, I was free to shoot the band out of harm's way.

The show went smooth and Alex Norman (vocals, guitar) really brought the crowd into it. I'm just a photographer, but even I got a huge charge out of their set simply because I could feel all the energy of the crowd flowing toward the stage. What more can I say that I haven't already said? Hmm... not sure. If you want to read more about illScarlett, here is a bunch of previous stuff: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 (and more). Good fun, all around.

Avril Lavigne

I honestly didn't have much intention of writing about Avril Lavigne, especially since I didn't have permission to photograph her. I mean, I'm no 10 year-old girl or anything, so even though I'm familiar with her music, I'm fairly indifferent toward it. But I ended up watching a few songs of her set - two from out near the grass at the back, and one from side-stage - and from those songs, two things became clear: First, she is an excellent performer with amazing pitch control. Really, she is good. And second, she deserves everything she has achieved. For the encore, her hubby Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 joined her on stage and together they played a version of In Too Deep. It pretty much rocked. Okay, maybe I am a 10 year-old girl.
