To celebrate the release of their sophomore album, 1UP!, illScarlett held CD release party at The Opera House, the very same venue they used to celebrate the release of their debut album, All Day With It. Although it doesn't feel like it to me, the releases were separated by 15 months, and during those months I've seen them perform countless times (well, actually, it can be counted: eleven). Relative to the other shows, this one had a fuller set list, with 14 high energy songs in the proper set, followed by 6 sweat-filled songs in the encore.
The band started out bold, opening the show with their current radio hit Take It For Granted, which is also the first track on the new album. I can't hear that song without thinking about the time I spent in the studio with them while they were recording the music video, so now I automatically associate it with buckets of flying paint. They followed up with Extra, Extra, the second track on the album, after which they start blending in some of their older material such as One-A, Nothing Special, and Who's Got it, among others. The new song Milkshakes & Razorblades went over well with the crowd, with the usual stream of crowd-surfers pouring into the pit in front of the stage.
Along with the new album comes a new colour theme to the show – the illScarlett fluorescent green being replaced by a backdrop of deep, earthy red to match their new album. Even Swav Pior's drum kit had changed over to fit the theme. It all looked great, and was emphasized by bursts of steam and flurries of confetti at key points. After a short break, the band returned for the satisfyingly full encore, closing out the night with... you guessed it... Mary Jane. As they headed off-stage, it was clear they were drained from the performance, but they the found the energy to spend another hour or so with their fans, signing CDs, posters, and shirts. It was a full day for illScarlett, starting out the day with interviews and also performing in multiple slots during War Child's Busking For Change event, but I'm sure they ended it feeling pretty satisfied.
