Patrick Krief is the guitarist for The Dears who just recently put together a collection of 7 solo songs and released them on CD. The CD release party was held at the Rivoli, with supporting bands Seedy Ease and Danielle Duval. In addition to friends and fans, there were a few independent media types, as well as a few other musicians, such as a couple of members of Pilate Speed, to help celebrate the release. I'm a fan of Robbie Butcher, the drummer for Seedy Ease, which was the initial draw for me. And although I hadn't heard any of Krief's solo material before the show, I know I like The Dears, so I figured it would be a good night out. So I'll admit that I was completely unprepared for what Krief was going to lay down for us.

Krief

Somebody has been studying their Hendrix and that somebody's name is Patrick Krief. Man, when this guy gets started, it's up close and personal. Many of the songs begin with decent rock, but once the soloing starts, stand back. During the last song of the set, Marching Backwards, he headed down into the crowd, even leaning up against fans while spilling out notes that would've made Jimi himself look twice. Once back up on stage, he went head-to-head with the bass player before collapsing onto his knees in guitar passion. I half expected him to set his guitar on fire. Self-indulgent? Maybe. Amazing? Absolutely. Krief is playing again at The Drake on September 12th, and at Rancho Relaxo on October 19th. Mark your calendar, because this is definitely recommended viewing.

Danielle Duval

Danielle Duval is a guitar player, pianist, and vocalist who fronts a four-piece band. She recently moved to Toronto from Montreal just before releasing a new CD in June of this year (as far as I can tell). Her set was generally energetic guitar-rock along with strong vocal melodies and emphasized by a few passionate facial expressions. She also played a couple of songs on the keyboard which highlighted her voice a little more than when she was on guitar. The set included a mellow cover of You're The One That I Want from Grease (yes, the one performed by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John) that seemed a little out of place.

Seedy Ease

As mentioned, I'm a fan of Robbie Butcher, both for his percussion skills and showmanship. He's always amazing to watch, and adds depth to any show. With Seedy Ease he also occasionally plays a small keyboard while drumming. The band is led by Daniel Brooks (vocals, guitar) who does a very decent job working both his guitars and the distortion pedals, and includes Hollie Stevenett who started out on the upright bass before moving to a electric version.
