As part of the Two Way Monologues series of showcases, TWM #5 featured Krief, The Schomberg Fair, and Obviously Five Believers. The showcase took place at the small upstairs location of Rancho Relaxo. I can't say I've seen a lot of shows there, but I've been there a few times and have never seen it so packed - the turnout for The Schomberg Fair was just incredible, and that's on top of everyone that was there to see Krief.

Whatever I said about Krief when I saw him play at the end of August still holds true. The set at Rancho Relaxo was similar to what I saw at the Rivoli, but some of the antics were toned down slightly. I was primed (in more ways than one) for Krief's set, and Lots of great music again.

I should mention that if you're using the recordings on MySpace to judge what you're going to see in concert, you may be misled. Krief plays those songs, but what comes out on stage is stronger and fuller, with bolder guitar licks. I asked Patrick about this discrepancy, and he says they are recording new material that more closely matches what they are playing at the shows. At least part of the difference could be that all parts on the EP were performed by Patrick Krief himself, but on stage he is joined by Andre Bendahan (bass), Roberto Piccioni (keyboards), and George Donoso III (drums) which do a great job filling in the sound, and providing musical encouragement for Patrick to let loose.

The Schomberg Fair

Playing a sort of western-style folk country southern rock with an edge, The Schomberg Fair performed in front of a densely packed crowd made up of a variety of attendees, but it definitely included friends and acquaintances from their hometown of Schomberg (home of the Schomberg Agricultural Spring Fair, an agricultural event "showcasing small town life"). Matt Bahen (vocals, guitar, harmonica) provides most of the eye-catching swagger, but his band mate Nathan Sidon (bass) adds contrasting deep vocals that might just make you want to ride 'em in and count 'em out. Not my usual style of music for listening at home, but for a live show, they're definitely worth the pub-level cover price at the door.
