I'm actually not sure why this show was billed as Major Maker vs. Small Sins, rather than just Major Maker and Small Sins, except that it sounds more cool. Or maybe I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. Either way, there is a strong connection between these two bands simply due to band membership. At least one of them is a permanent member of both bands, and on top of that, most of the members of Small Sins played on stage with Major Maker. About a third of the audience dressed up for Halloween, but the bands wore their usual clothes as the show was being recorded on video.

Major Maker

The core of Major Maker is keyboard player Todor Kobakov and singer/songwriter Lindy Vopnfjord, but the band on stage was rounded out by most of the members of Small Sins. Major Maker has been getting some recent attention due to their song Rollercoaster being selected for use in a Maynards Candy commercial. When the commercial was first released, everyone wanted to know who the artist was behind the great jingle. There was a delay in the announcement, but once the details got sorted out, Major Maker went to the studio to record a full-length version of the song, and released it on iTunes.

The music is often inspired by the sounds of 60's pop, showing stronger in songs such as Rollercoaster and Last Goodbye, but at other times can have a bit of 80's synth pop showing through. I find the 60's pop based tunes to be more infectious, but in both cases Lindy's youthful-sounding vocals add a happy component.

Small Sins

The super-fun stage presence of Small Sins, and in particular keyboard player who picked up his small keyboard to wail on it like a guitar, makes for great viewing. And I won't even mention the large foam hands... too funny. Their music doesn't quite agree with me, but I was clearly in the minority there. Maybe just forget I even said that - their set was good Halloween night fun. I would even see them again.

The Wizard Of Rock

In a move that seemed well-suited to Halloween, The Wizard Of Rock opened the show. Actually, I had sort of assumed this was a just-for-Halloween act, but from what I can tell, this is a year round venture. The Wizard does a kind of rock-out-white-boy-hip-hop thing with some humour - a style that he says combines his love of classic Hip-Hop and Rock with a penchant for blatant copyright infringement. (And, yup, I stole that from his MySpace page). It was fun, for a while. I particularly enjoyed when he attempted to hypnotize us into buying merchandise (photo below).
