It was Akira Alemany (vocals, guitar) from Modernboys Moderngirls who let me know they were putting together a night at The Horseshoe and were going to be playing with Oh No Forest Fires and Dinosaur Bones, two bands that I've seen before and will very happily see again (even more so now, see below). Also on the bill was Everything All The Time, a band which I knew nothing about, except that I liked their name.

Modernboys Moderngirls

Although the name implies some sort of equality among the sexes, Modernboys Moderngirls actually consists of four modern boys and only two modern girls. And speaking of the band name, there's something about the word "modern" that concerns me, mostly because it reminds me of the band Modern English and their hit I Melt With You which I've heard far more times in my life than required. So I somehow expected an 80's sound to their music, but that expectation was proven extremely wrong very quickly. Instead I was hit with sounds from the 60's mixed with some of the roughness of the 90's and melodic hooks of the 70's. Rock. Really great rock. This show was described as their final summer show before their fall tour. I'm not sure where their tour will be taking them, but this band falls easily into the "recommended" bucket.

Dinosaur Bones

Incorporating a few mild sounds of jazz into their somewhat spacious and melodic guitar-based rock, whatever complaints I had when I first saw Dinosaur Bones play their fourth show are gone. And what I previously described as "musical promise" is being delivered, now. The independent music scene in Toronto is changing, and bands like Dinosaur Bones are the ones that are convincing me there is something happening here.

Oh No Forest Fires

This is a local band that I've been out to see a few times for the best reason possible: I have a great time at their shows. Rajiv Thavanathan (vocals, guitar) continues to be a unique force with his nearly insane off-beat and vigorous bouncing around. Even stranger, Rajiv's style is now inflitrating the actions of all the other band members, such that he whole band is becoming one with chaos, including Adam Nimmo (drums) who stood up and played for a bit to get in on the action. It is a truly chaotic show, but the music is so surprisingly cohesive, which just intensifies the appeal. Always a good time.
