After spending four late nights out being a part of NXNE, and despite the fact I was suffering from symptoms of sleep deprivation, I headed out to see My Morning Jacket, who rolled through Toronto just one day after NXNE all ended. I had heard amazing things about their shows, all backed up by the pretty incredible live recording Okonokos, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. They came to Toronto straight from Bonnaroo, where we were told that their equipment got caught up in a bit of a rainstorm. And even though Jim James (vocals, guitar) mentioned that they were having a few equipment issues, I wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't mentioned it.

Seeing My Morning Jacket brings back memories of some of the rock shows that I attended when I was (much, much) younger. Although the music draws from a number of influences, the mood of the show definitely had a bit of a 70's flavour to it. They started their two-hour set with Evil Urges, the title track from their new album. In Fact, about half of the 19 song set-list was devoted to songs from the new album, and the encore drew from their previous two albums Z and It Still Moves. In spot six of the set list was the unique song Highly Suspicious, which rolled through the room in a way that I couldn't previously have imagined. The visuals of the big-bearded Jim James grooving his way through that song, emphasized by his high-pitched falsetto, was definitely the right amount of awesome and amusing to bring a smile to my face.

The set mellowed out for quite a while, with James occasionally donning a cape to add some theatrics to a few of songs. For the last song in the proper set, they played the lengthy Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt. 2. from the new album Evil Urges; a song that, not too surprisingly, ends with a scream. But the way they pulled it off in concert was memorable. The end of the song contains drawn out keyboards, and as they played into it the lights dimmed and the volume decreased, until suddenly the scream was blasted through the room. At the same time, a flash of bright light filled the stage, just enough to see the members running off. The people in front of me actually jumped, and then laughed.
