The Coast, The Wet Secrets, Birds Of Wales
The New Odds, Major Maker, White Cowbell Oklahoma

[Note From Pete] This article is by Tom E who is a long time friend of mine, and whether you see him or not, he's often out at the shows with me, sometimes providing valuable feedback on performances from a different perspective... the back of the room. But for NXNE, Tom E wielded a camera and was out there checking out bands from the front lines so that, together, we could bring you even more independent action. If you know what I mean. So here is Tom's first article... enjoy! If you like Tom's work, please go Find Tom on Facebook.

The Coast @ The Horseshoe

I got out a little early on day one and by chance managed to catch most of the set from The Coast. I remember liking them but I'm not sure why, and to peg they're style, I'm also not sure. They just left me with the feeling that I'd really like to see them again.

The Wet Secrets @ The Horseshoe

Next up, and a band I was really looking forward to, was The Wet Secrets and they didnít disappoint. The crowd was definitely starting to pack in and when they started Grow Your Own Fucking Moustache, Asshole the crowd erupted in support. Towering above us in full marching band dress and hailing from Edmonton they opted not to travel with their Tuba but none seemed the wiser. Still, Iíd really like to see them again with the Tuba!

Birds Of Wales @ Black Bull

Next up is a local band that really deserved a bigger and better venue, but they were a last minute add to the NXNE line up and it was great to see them out. Birds of Wales had the 11 PM slot at the Black Bull, and once again their decidedly female fan base come out in full support. Things were a little wack at the Bull, but after everyone settled in, Morgan Ross and the boys turned it up and gave it their all.

The New Odds @ El Mocambo

Now dashing over to the El Mocambo I met up with Pete for The New Odds. This was great set of solid indie rock ín roll. There have been a couple band changes since the early days but they are definitely back and, as they continually play off each other, they have just as much fun as the rest of us. Itís clear theyíre going to be around for a while.

Major Maker @ El Mocambo

As The New Odds finished up their set, it was time for Pete to move on and I stuck around for Major Maker. Iíve seen Lindy in the past but never Major Maker and with their recent success with Roller Coaster I was eager to see what else they had. Unfortunately, the mix that night wasnít great so although they put on a good show Iím sure theyíve had better nights... Iím still a fan and looking forward to another night out with the band.

White Cowbell Oklahoma @ The Horseshoe

Well, itís almost 2 AM, so time to meet up with Pete again, and to see the always-entertaining White Cowbell Oklahoma. If you havenít seen these guitar rippín rednecks youíre really missing out. Rumour has it that the show has mellowed over the years but they still come packed with surprises. If power grinders, flame throwers, and real chainsaws donít get your attention maybe the absurdly freaky naked clown will... all this with guitar heavy, mind pounding country style ROCK! What an adrenalin pumping way to end the night!
