NXNE 2008: Tom's Friday
We Are The Take, Creepshow, Arkells
Attack In Black, Brant Bjork
Bedouin Soundclash, Bionic

[Note From Pete] Once again, Tom reports in on NXNE. On Friday, our paths only crossed once, and that was only for a few minutes of Bedouin Soundclash. Since the place was insane and Tom was going to stick it out, I left him to his own devices and I headed over to Hot Springs. Anyway, here is Tom's Friday night.

We Are The Take @ The Mod Club

It's NXNE Day 2 and I've started a little too late to catch Lindi Ortega at The Mod Club, but I'm there in time for We Are The Take, which is the real reason I headed out of club-zone and over into Little Italy. It's a solid set of well written indie pop-rock. It's a bit of a surprise that no one has signed these guys yet! Catch them this Thursday (June 25) at the El Mocambo... you deserve a night out with good music, and they won't disappoint.

Creepshow @ The Mod Club

Next up was Creepshow, and although I wasn't familiar with them at the time, I did meet up with a few young fans earlier on so I decided to stick it out to see what all the hype and macabre was about. They've been touted as psychobilly & hellbilly; with a stand-up bass and sinister-minister keyboardist, it all seems quite fitting as Sarah 'Sin' leads the band through some horror film inspired rock'a billy roll.

Arkells @ El Mocambo

Almost as if inspired by the horror rock, the weather outside was rolling with thunder and an accompanying light show; a great show on it's own if I didn't need to cross town to get to Pride Tiger. Feeling like a wet dog I arrived only to find out that Pride Tiger had van trouble and sadly didn't make it to NXNE. In their place... The Arkells! And to top that off, the mystery guest following was Attack In Black! The Arkells have recently been backing up the Tokyo Police Club on tour, and Attack In Black shouldn't really need any introductions... this is a great line-up and I quickly forgot about my misadventures in the pouring rain.

Brant Bjork @ El Mocambo

This night continues on with ever increasing guitar-centric rock as Brant Bjork takes the stage; and with a hint of something sweet still lingering in the air, he shows us how it's done. It's a style befitting of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, so I'm quickly drawn in by the skilful pitch changes and melodic riffs. I'm always in awe of those that can express such raw emotion through a six string.

Bedouin Soundclash @ El Mocambo

Now time for a change of pace... Bedouin Soundclash is about to take stage upstairs and the crowd is packed in tighter than a Tokyo subway at rush hour, and just as unforgiving. As the music starts the crowd seems to move en-mass to a rock-ska-soul mix that keeps everyone in constant motion. I'm too late to position myself well for photos, so all I can do now is get caught up in the crowd and enjoy.

Bionic @ El Mocambo

So where does that leave me? Well, it's going on past 2 AM and I'm running on a guitar-induced high. As I wait for Pete, one last band takes the stage. Closing out my night seems to be a band called Bionic. It's pure power rock, with a little rough and raw punk tossed into the mix. It's was pretty late and they still gathered a good crowd but after a couple quick songs my time was up... it was time to catch my ride with Pete and go.
