Saturday is always a conflicted night for me, with lots of great shows scheduled, but also lots fun things to do other than concerts. That's just the way it is. I tell you this because when Saturday night of NXNE arrived, I started out at a friend's party where people were making up various martinis. Mine was called the Cat Peetini and was a mixture of Gin, Vermouth, and Limoncello. Nothing better than a drink that reminds you of cat urine, right? So when I left the party, I was appropriately lubed and ready for some shows, but I didn't manage to get out until midnight. This meant I missed Spiral Beach at The Horseshoe, which I really wanted to see. So first stop was the Cadillac Lounge for Revival Dear and Entire Cities, and then for a pretty serious change of pace, I headed over to The Horseshoe for Ladyhawk.

Revival Dear

One of my best friends manages Revival Dear, so there is a connection that brings me to these shows, but don't think that's the only reason I go. It's been a while since I've been out to see Revival Dear, and when I looked through the midnight time slot of the NXNE schedule, they were the band I wanted to see most. Even though country-rock isn't really my thing, watching Eddie Orso (vocals, guitar) and Shelley Hayes (vocals, mandolin) blast out their music with a fist-full of musical passion is totally my thing. I've seen them a few times before and I'll see them again simply because every time I do, I have a great time. With live music, the vibe of the performance is important, and Revival Dear always has that going strong.

Entire Cities

Another local blogger over at It's Not The Band I Hate, It's Their Fans wrote a few articles up on Entire Cities, gushing a little about both their live show and their recordings. Combined, that's a pretty strong recommendation, and since they were scheduled to be at the Cadillac Lounge right after Revival Dear, it worked perfectly for me to hang around, have one more beer, and see what this band could do. I really like their song Talkers (available on their MySpace page) because there are aspects of it that remind me of The Hold Steady, but less rock and more folk, so I was hoping that I'd get to hear additional songs like that. Most of their stuff falls a little more on the folk side of things, but they put on a good show. Their performance is a strange mixture of energetic playing with casual behaviour, and tight musicianship mixed with random moments. I like what they do, and it was a great fit for the Cadillac Lounge.

Ladyhawk

Although I had no problem making my way up to the stage before Ladyhawk came out, once they started playing, staying in that spot was an incredible challenge. The crowd started moshing, beer sprayed around, beer bottles flew and smashed on stage, and as the guy beside me (also named Pete) got slammed forward into the stage, bits of glass got stuck in his hands. I held out for about 3 or 4 songs to attempt to get a few decent shots, but quite quickly my head, back, and arms were soaked with beer as I hunched over my camera to protect it from, uh... everything. I moved off to the side for one or two more shots, then watched the rest of the show from a little further back. The band stopped twice, once to move some of the broken glass and again later to tell the crowd to ease-up a bit. It was more like a scene for a punk band, but Ladyhawk is really just good hard rock, so the over-the-top aggressiveness of the crowd was a little out of place. The band did a great job of both pumping out their rock and handling the insanity. After the show, I got myself home, cleaned my camera, and showered off all the beer. Craziness.
