NXNE 2008: Tom's Saturday
Matthew Barber, Said The Whale
Matt Mays and El Torpedo
We Are Wolves, Black Diamond Bay

[Note from Pete] I hope you've enjoyed all this bonus NXNE content from Tom; if you like his work, why not visit Tom on Facebook and leave a message for him. For the most part, I think Tom is back to his normal life now, but I'm sure he'll still be joining me regularly for shows, and even bringing his camera along every now and then.

Matthew Barber

Maybe it was the long afternoon in the sun at Six Shooter or the martinis at my friend's party but, dazed and confused, I rushed off prematurely and ended up at the Rivoli in time for Matthew Barber. Apparently, he took a bit of break from songwriting but has re-emerged with new material. Definitely leaning toward folk-pop, it's quickly apparent that he's a confident singer song writer and someone to keep an eye on.

Said The Whale

I've waited a long time to finally get out and see these guys, so... no pressure! Said The Whale took the stage and... they rocked it! Well, okay, I'm a little biased. Their style is a step up from folk-pop, more toward pop-rock, and it's great; the music is tight and the writing is fresh; so for a relatively new band on the scene these guys are definitely on my hot watch list. I'd like to see then on their home turf out West. Hmm, might be yet another good reason to head West and visit some old friends.

Matt Mays & El Torpedo

Back in an East coast reality, I'm now a few doors down waiting in the iconic Horseshoe Tavern for Matt Mays and El Torpedo to take the stage. The crowd has definitely packed in for Matt, and so should they be. Matt Mays and El Torpedo come out and immediately start to tear it up, it was obvious they were having fun and the crowd responded in kind. Aside from a short technical interruption where Matt playfully attempted some standup comedy, these guys gave it their all and everyone ate it up; FYI, I would think twice about hiring Matt to do standup, but it was a good distraction while the roadies worked their magic.

We Are Wolves

Next up is a band I've heard a lot about but never got around to seeing: We Are Wolves. Story has it, I should have seen them the other night at Sneaky Dee's because tonight the stars just didn't seem to align for them. Although the show was good, it lacked a certain level of intensity and that apparently was present the other night. Either way I really didn't regret my choice to see them tonight and if things just get better from here then I'll be looking out for them the next time they pass through town.

Black Diamond Bay

It's 2 AM again, and although I'm starting to feel the pains of late night after late night, the El Mocambo was the place to see Patrick Krief (of The Dears) play with this new band Black Diamond Bay. This was six-string talent and passion in another dimension... with a decidedly harder edge. Artist and audience alike fed off the energy and by the end of the set there was no denying we had not seen or heard just 'a show', instead it was 'an experience'! No better way to exit the NXNE 2008.
