A great line-up is easy to spot, and so from the moment the announcement was made that Paul Price, The Beautiful Unknown, and The Dunes were all playing Tattoo Rock Parlour on May 22nd, I planned on being there. Of course, if you saw my last article, you know that I skipped out on the night to catch We Are The Take, the unfortunate side-effect being that I ended up missing the entire set by The Beautiful Unknown. But now is as good a time as any to introduce you to Tom E, a good friend of mine who is often out at the shows with me. You see, he stayed at Tattoo for that set and even took photos. Tom and I will be working together during NXNE to bring even more coverage, so think of this as a practice round.

Paul Price

Paul Price (vocals, guitar) has been down in L.A. writing some new material, and (as far as I know) this was the first time some of the new material had been played on stage. The set started with a wickedly loud and awesome piece of rock, and continued on at a pretty amazing pace. Paul was backed by some great musicians... if you think you recognize the guy on guitar, that's because it's James Roberston who plays lead for Run With The Kittens. Although I think a few of the newer songs will benefit from more stage time, the set held together really well. The set was capped off with a couple of solo songs on acoustic guitar.

The Beautiful Unknown

So while I was up at Supermarket basking in the music from We Are The Take, everything was running on schedule at Tattoo Rock Parlour – timing that meant I missed the whole set of The Beautiful Unknown. It was unfortunate for me since I really was hoping to see this band again after having a great time when I saw them in 2006. My friend Tom was there, though, taking photos and silently rocking out like he tends to do. Although I don't have too many details, he did mention that rather than Alex Bollo on lead guitar, the band had Kirt Godwin (from Trophy) instead. Apparently he did a great job.

The Dunes

I saw The Dunes for the first time when they played at the Vacuity CD Release Party, and enjoyed it just the right amount to make me want more. This time around, I was listening a little more closely and discovered that the songs that were introduced as "new songs" seemed to stand out. It sounds like Kevin Pullen (vocals, guitar) is doing more with his voice in the new material, and there also seems to be a little more to the compositions. I know they've been recording, but I'm not exactly sure what stage they're at. One of their new songs, called Let It Go, can be heard on either their MySpace or Facebook pages... it's a just a demo, but the sound is decent and I like the direction.
