People In Planes is once again on another small tour ahead of their upcoming CD release, bringing along with them an Australian band Skybombers and with The Beautiful Unknown getting the evening started.

People In Planes

Although the Tattoo Rock Parlour is significantly bigger than the Rivoli where I last saw People In Planes, it still feels strange seeing them perform in venues this small. They've got amazing music, they've got stage presence galore, and they put the two together in a way that should draw any alternative rock fan to the shows. Their new album Beyond The Horizon still hasn't been released yet, but the latest report is that it will be out on September 9th. Even though I've only heard the CD once, I have heard a bunch of the material in concert twice now, and there are at least a few hits on there.

The set list was in a noticeably different order this time, although it followed the same formula of 14 songs followed by a 3 song encore, with the same opening song Mayday (M'aidez) and the same final two songs Talk To Much and Vampires. For one of the songs, Peter Roberts (guitar, vocals) brought out a hand-painted acoustic guitar, reminding me of Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals who is also from Wales and also uses interestingly hand-painted guitars.

The crowd was a little more tame this time around, perhaps due to the Tattoo having possibly the worst selection of beer in the city, but the performance was just as invigorating, much of it due to fervent efforts of Gareth Jones (vocals, guitar). I'm sure they'll be back around following the release of their new album.

Skybombers

Even though The Beautiful Unknown had the crowd up and at the stage, everyone returned to a safe distance for the Skybombers set, a band out of Melbourne, Australia touring with People In Planes through August, and performing in Toronto for the first time ever. They didn't allow the empty space near the stage deter them in any way, and showed off a crazy amount of energy while plowing through their beautifully raw rock 'n' roll. Take one part grunge, one part brit-pop, a healthy shot of classic AC/DC, and a touch of classic punk, and you're drinking Skybombers.

The Beautiful Unknown

Opening the night was local rock band, The Beautiful Unknown, with their catchy rock songs that could possibly be compared to bands like The Strokes. Tom Barlow (vocals, guitar) is a confident performer, with some quick-thinking-in-between-song-banter that brought the crowd up to the stage and got them bouncing and dancing along to the music. Opening the evening is always tougher than being the main act, like The Beautiful Unknown was the last time I saw them (almost two years ago now!), but they were able to warm up the crowd nicely and played it like pros.
