Pete's Pick: The Details

The Details are a Winnipeg-based band that have only been together since 2005, but their debut full-length effort Draw A Distance. Draw A Border has the feel of a band that has been honing their skills together for many years. As this CD played, I went from sceptic, to interested listener, to fan. The album opens with six individually brilliant songs all in a row, peaking with the song A National Anthem which also marks the end of the first half of the album. If this was on vinyl, it probably would've taken me months to flip it over and listen to Side B just because I would've got stuck listening to Side A again and again.
Jon Plett (vocals, guitar, keyboard) holds many of the songs together with his distinctive vocals, singing over top of the musical depth created by Keli Martin (bass, keyboard), Sean Vidal (guitar, keyboard), and Shaun Gibson (drums, percussion). Possible influences include The Weakerthans, Death Cab For Cutie, and Cracker. They were in Toronto for Canadian Music Week, but I missed them. They will be back on April 27th and 28th at The Boat, and then at The Drake on May 10th. A National Anthem and other songs are available for listening on MySpace.
