My copy of Centuries Before Love And War by Stars Of Track And Field has been getting a fair amount of mileage this year, mostly due to the three songs Movies Of Antarctica, With You, and Arithmatik. I managed to get out and see them perform to a capacity crowd during CMW at Revival, and despite the incredibly difficult lighting (always a concern for photographers) I really enjoyed the show. So I've been wanting to see them again, and given that they've played six times in Toronto in the past five months, there's been plenty of opportunity. But my schedule didn't cooperate until just recently when they played a show at the El Mocambo along with Cary Brothers.
The mood at the El Mocambo was more raw than at Revival, partly due to the lighting, but also just due to the venue itself, the heat, and the fact that the band apparently hadn't slept in 36 hours. Either way, the performance was excellent, and I was happy to be able to actually see Daniel Orvik (drums) this time – at Revival he was tucked in the back, out of the way of all lighting. They played a few songs that aren't on the album, and did some great renditions of those that are. They're continuing to tour with Cary Brothers iin the States throughout August, but I'm guessing that there will be more opportunities to see them again in Toronto later this year.
