While many photographers and reviewers were out covering the Arcade Fire at Massey Hall on Wednesday night, I headed out to Lee's Palace to photograph Tapes 'n Tapes. I published Tapes 'n Tapes as Pete's Pick on August 30th, 2006 and their album The Loon took spot #4 in my Top 10 of 2006. As a result, I went into this concert heavily biased because I already know their music and listen to it regularly. It also meant that I had some high expectations.

The one critical piece of information you need to know is that the band lived up to my expectations. There was potential for them to play through their album The Loon and just leave it at that. And although they did cover a lot of material from The Loon, they also played some new material. And no matter how much I love their studio recordings, the material is stronger on stage. The passion I feel from them in Jacov's Suite is multiplied many times over when they perform it on stage.

Lee's Palace was hot and sticky that night, a bit strange with the cool weather we were having that day. Josh Grier (vocals, guitar) kept commenting on it, perhaps hoping that someone who worked there might be able to do something about it. But, no. So Josh and the others sweated it out through their set, Josh visibly sweating through all his clothing. They closed the set with Jacov's Suite (mentioned above) and then said good night.

Ladyhawk

Ladyhawk is a Canadian band that has this one song called The Dugout that I find myself listening to regularly, so it was happy to see they were going to be opening for Tapes 'n Tapes. Their music shares some of the feel of that from The Constantines, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that members from The Constantines are friends with the guys from Ladyhawk, and were in the audience to watch the Ladyhawk set.
