For the second year in a row, I headed out to The Verge XM holiday party. Last year was a pretty wild party at the Tattoo Rock Parlour with Moneen headlining, and this year was similar in many ways, but instead took place across the road at the Velvet Underground. I don't have XM radio, but I recently signed up for a 14-day trial because they have recently released an iPhone application that allows you to stream XM to your phone, no satellite receiver needed. Very cool. There are about 2 or 3 stations I've been listening to, but The Verge is by far the one I listen to most. They play all Canadian bands and the rotation is excellent. The line-up for Thank God It's Not Another Xmas Party was a good representation of the station content: Dinosaur Bones, Still Life Still, Meligrove Band, and The Junction.
As you entered the party, you received a Molson Canadian guitar pick, redeemable at the bar for one beer. As a result, the party got started quickly creating a mood that is usually reserved for later in the night. Despite the awkward setup at the Velvet Underground, with its odd metal-grate moat around the stage, the bands all performed well. The sound wasn't ideal either, but that didn't stop the fans from dancing up front and singing along. Lots of music industry people in attendance, including members of other bands, gave the night a true music community feel. A great night organized by a radio station that truly cares about the Canadian independent music scene.
