I should let you know that I'm relatively indifferent toward The Balconies' self-titled album. It's not that I don't want to listen to it, but there's something about the sound that makes it only good in small doses. However, it turns out there is something about their live performance that just didn't transfer to the recording. It's a combination of stage energy, the brighter sound of a live performance, and bags of charisma. It helps explain why The Balconies have received quite a lot of blogger love, both back when they were living in Ottawa, and now with their recent relocation to Toronto.
Jacquie Neville (vocals, guitar) carries a good portion of that on stage charisma. Male or female, it's hard to take your eyes off of her, whether she's singing or showing off her abilities on the guitar. It was one of those sets that felt too short. A couple of people who have seen The Balconies multiple times in the past few months told me "it gets even better", so I'm really looking forward to seeing them again soon.
Note: Sorry for the extremely brief write-up, but I'm going to be keeping my written portion of articles to a minimum while I continue to work on a new project over the next month or so. That project is a new online music magazine called Sticky Magazine, and I hope you'll consider joining the Facebook page, following Sticky Magazine on Twitter, and maybe even adding us as a friend us on MySpace to keep up to date on what will be coming your way.
