The Framework been together for just under a year at this point, but not quite in the way most bands materialize. To start with, Ryan Kash, who was a top 30 contestant on Rock Star: INXS, created their MySpace page before teaming up with anyone, or even having any music in mind. And then once he convinced Chris Graham to partner with him, the duo got together and pumped out a song entitled She Thinks I'm Famous. The team was rounded out with Rayanne Lepieszo on keyboards, Scott Winter on bass, and Tobias Smith on drums. Having never performed the song on stage and with only a demo in hand, Ryan and Chris decided to enter it in the Mix 99.9 Radiostar contest. It placed 3rd. Their first show was eventually scheduled for July, and they have been doing about one show a month since then.

I should mention that their influences on MySpace reads like a list of my most disliked bands, such as The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Joy Division, to mention a few. But the good thing about influences is that they are just that, influences. To some extent, I can hear the Brit-Alt-Wave influence, but in comparison to the bands I've mentioned, I hear more of a Britpop sound, with sections of fuller instrumentation, vocal melody, and an edginess that is reminiscent of late 90's Canadian hard rock (specifically, I'm thinking of The Tea Party).

Ryan Kash (vocals, guitar) definitely holds the charisma card, and although some of his gestures and poses seemed slightly forced through the first couple of songs, once he found the groove, his captivating actions seemed to flow naturally. Writing partner Chris Graham (guitar, vocals) also shares some of the lead vocals, but in my opinion his most important contributions are the decent riffs that contrast some of the standard jangly bits. The Framework play next at The Mod Club on February 9th.
