I wasn't planning on going out on Wednesday night, so I didn't really look around to see what was on. But around 5pm that night I checked my Facebook and saw a status update talking about the line-up at the Bovine Sex Club that night: The Reason, Songs From A Room, and Amos The Transparent. It had been almost two weeks since I had seen Amos The Transparent and was suffering from withdrawal, and was in the mood to hear some Songs From A Room. I hadn't seen The Reason before, but had heard good things from multiple sources. So no, I wasn't planning on being out, but next thing you know, I was at the Bovine.
Headlining the night was The Reason, another band out of Hamilton. For better or worse, their band name reminds me of the song from Hoobastank by the same name - something they probably hear all the time. This was the first time I had heard their music, and on first listen I would describe it as radio-friendly alternative rock. I wasn't sure I was going to stay for the whole set just because I had to work in the morning, but about four songs in I found myself sucked in by their inspired delivery and decided to stick around for the whole set. The setup at the Bovine is a little awkward, but The Reason had the bar pretty much packed on a Wednesday, with people right up against the stage. Since I wasn't previously familiar with their music, I was unable to differentiate between old and new songs, but with a full-length album in the works right now, I have to imagine we heard a good number of new ones. The Reason will be playing the Bovine again Wednesday, June 10th with Amos The Transparent and Isle Of Thieves, which is likely to be another great night. Recommended viewing.

Songs From A Room
Songs From A Room is one of those bands I've been running into fairly regularly, sometimes just through coincidence, like at the CMW '09 Kick-Off Party or when they did an incredible job opening the night at the Arkells, and sometimes just through my desire to hear yet another set of their brand of screaming-loud rock (a description I use just about every time I write about them). I seriously enjoy rocking-out to their set-closing song Revival, but after listening to their EP a few more times now, I think it is The Black That We Clad that has become my favorite, with it's 60's-inspired backup vocals and spacious-feel. Some nights, like last Wednesday, Songs From A Room are what I need.

Amos The Transparent
I'm starting to feel like an Amos The Transparent addict, since one of the main reasons I made it out last Wednesday was to get another fix of their incredible rock. The set was definitely shorter than when I saw them just 12 days earlier at The Horseshoe, and didn't reach the same level of fan-to-band electricity that I witnessed at the Rancho Relaxo during CMW '09, but it didn't matter to me or the group of other fans up front singing along. They played a well organized set of (almost) all the songs I wanted to hear, and even though the majority of people were out to see The Reason, they delivered the material like they were playing to a room full of their own fans. In fact, during the set, quite a few people made their way forward from the back of the venue to check them out. Amos The Transparent is back at the Bovine this Wednesday with The Reason, this time playing in second spot rather than opening the night.
