In celebration of one full year of Two Way Monologues showcases, Rancho Relaxo hosted a three day TWM Festival, with four bands each night and a compilation CD included with entrance. I've been to a few of these TWM showcases over the year, and not only do I always have a great time at them, I've seen some surprisingly good sets by bands that were previously unknown to me. Each time I go there I run into more and more people I've met at previous shows. It seems that Dan, the promoter for Rancho Relaxo, has created a little ecosystem for showcasing new talent to a fairly dedicated group of indie music lovers (including two other bloggers Bob and Jen). I could only make it out to Day 2 of the festival which was on Friday night (sadly missing Mark Berube, Tin Bangs, and The Schomberg Fair on Saturday), and like every time I go there on a Friday, I took advantage of the inexpensive pints of delicious micro-brewed beer, listened to some good music, and ultimately had yet another a great time.

Amos The Transparent

Unfortunately, I didn't get out in time to see the first band, Coast Guard, but I did make it in time for most of the set by the second band Amos The Transparent. Aside from really liking their band name for no particular reason, I'd also read a few good reviews about their previous shows. The entire band was wearing standard issue jeans and white t-shirt, which was described as a last minute decision for the band. While discussing this fact, Jonathan Chandler (vocals, guitar) promised something a little more stage appropriate for their upcoming show during NXNE.

Fox Jaws

Fox Jaws always puts on an charged set full of indie-passion, with Dan Allen (guitar, vocals) and Carleigh Aikins (vocals) pushing the limits. The show is visually astounding, inspiring good times.

Beth In Battle Mode

Since I'm running late on getting these photos posted, I'm going to steal the words of the legendary anonymous Lonely Vagabond (and his blog). Apparently he was there too, and he had this to say about Beth In Battle Mode: A sound that's almost a convergence of musical-elements, capturing that 60's psych-garage-rock spirit, 80's inspired synth-electro-pop, and stirring soul-drenched vocals reminiscent of late 70's post-punk (e.g. Pete Shelley). Whatever the case, the band is an intense-yet-catchy pastiche of energy, well-crafted songs, demonstrating that the retro-garage-rock sparkle is alive and well. Yeah, what he said.
