If you know Wintersleep only because of the song Weighty Ghost that is being played on the radio, then you'll either be surprised or blown away by their live act. I fell into the latter category... I just wasn't expecting that. I'm a very recent fan having only picked up their latest album, Welcome To The Night Sky, less than a month ago, but the purchase was based on numerous recommendations I've received over the past year, and even before buying the album I had hoped to get out to see them play at The Horseshoe back in October. But I couldn't make it that night, nor could I make it to The MOD Club show in November. It's now only a few months later, and this time they played to a packed house at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

The only real indication of what you're in for at a Wintersleep concert is the big album closer Miasmal Smoke & the Yellow Bellied Freaks which clocks in at just over 8 minutes. It's some heavy and brilliant stuff. Well, the whole show wasn't heavy, just the really memorable parts. It started out fairly gentle, but when Wintersleep starts rolling, the drums come in big and the guitars and bass move in hard. There was definitely a build-up from the start of the concert, through the soft and catchy Weighty Ghost, up until the final song of the set. For that they played a truly epic number which included a massive jam session that managed to stay just on this side of self-indulgent before hitting the huge finish. For the encore they plowed into some heavy rock with Animal-style abuse of the drum kit by Loel Campbell and finished the night with the entire band performing highly coordinated rocking-out. The musicianship was incredible, even better than all those recommendations had led me to believe. No wonder they're generating fans as fast as they are.

As I was walking out of the venue I heard two guys talking and one of them said I didn't know Wintersleep played music like that. Neither did I, but it turns out they do, and when I see a Canadian band with a show as captivating as this, it gets me thinking about how exciting the Canadian music industry is.
