I started Thursday of NXNE '09 with Zeus and ended up seeing a total of eight bands play that same night. Even though sometimes the first set of the night can fade in my memory, Zeus stood out in their own way among a night of great performances. For the month July, Zeus is doing a Wednesday night residency at The Dakota Tavern - I missed the first one on July 1st, but when July 8th rolled around I was looking to get out and photograph and band, and Zeus was it.

The Arts & Crafts label appears to be on a bit of a signing spree, and fortunately for Zeus, they are now part of the family. As a result, there were more than a few people in the audience associated with the label. I didn't see Feist like last time, but lots of people from the label itself as well as members from other bands. Between that, the good beer, and unique lighting, The Dakota Tavern can have such a great feel to it, and the music of Zeus just added to the whole thing. There were some similar patterns in the set list order as during NXNE, with the band playing their very cool cover of That's All and closing the night with the extremely heavy late-60's hard rock inspired song that I have yet to learn the name of, but has become my favorite.

On July 1st, Jason Collett opened the night (Mike O'Brien plays in Jason Collett's band) , and tonight (July 15th) they have Gentleman Reg and Danielle Duval. Because there are five Wednesdays in July this year, that leaves two more opportunities for you to catch them. On July 22nd, they bring along Peter Elkas, and on the last night of their residency, July 29th, they have The Golden Dogs (from whence Neil Quinn came. Should be a great night... I always love seeing The Golden Dogs play).

William Delray And The Sexy Moving Parts

William Delray and a large group of people that I suppose he refers to as The Sexy Moving Parts opened the night with some cool music, and at least a couple of stand-out songs. Although this is not a completely fair comparison, there were a couple of moments where he reminded me of Patrick Watson in some ways, but when The Sexy Moving Parts were filling the room with sound, I would lose that signal. Liked it.

Camera Equipment Notes: For anyone who is into photography, I thought you might be interested that all these photos were taken with a Canon T1i camera body that I purchased to fill in for my Canon 40D while it is out being repaired. Although the controls of the T1i are cramped and not as convenient as my 40D, the high ISO quality is better than expected. The Dakota Tavern lighting is very cool, but also dimmer than it looks. Although I shot a bunch of photos at ISO 1600, many of the photos in this article were taken at ISO 3200, and this one was taken at ISO 6400 (mostly as an experiment, but I was surprised how well it turned out).

Pete! I was there tonight! Stood in line for more than 45 minutes, then saw Gentleman Reg (love love love) and Zeus, who were so good! Stupid Dakota, stupid lineups, stupid guestlist people that kept going ahead of me. Good thing the show was great!
