Here it is, the week of NXNE, where Toronto is host to an amazing variety of independent music and music-related films from both Canada and abroad. I've been trying to find time to do some rough planning, but still haven't figured out where I'm going to end up. Despite that, here are picks that I hope provide you with enough incentive to get out and see some great independent music. If you're thinking of getting out more than one night, or planning on hopping from venue to venue, the NXNE wristband is the way to go. Or if you've got some money burning a hole in your pocket, consider the NXNE Priority Pass which allows you to jump the line (but doesn't guarantee admission), or the NXNE VIP Super Pass that allows you to pre-book 10 shows. Either way, a great tool for making plans is MyNXNE, a site where you can check out the entire band schedule, make picks, and then print out your own personalized schedule. This year, I'm limiting myself to one (published) pick per time slot, which means that I'm leaving out all sorts of great bands, both local and from way-out-of-town. In some cases, it pains me to leave them out, but I guess sometimes I like a little pain. I think you know what I mean. If you're out during NXNE and happen to witness a mind-blowing performance, don't keep it to yourself. Instead, email me at pete@petenema.com and let me know about it. If I get enough responses, I'm thinking of doing a wrap-up article that summarizes your experiences (and, obviously, I need your feedback to do that). Thursday, June 18th

Saturday, June 20thThere are so many great bands playing at 11:00 PM on Saturday that you can pretty much pick any good venue and go see what they have playing there. I selected Inward Eye as my pick just because I've really been enjoying their shows recently.
