For the two days prior and the day of the Junos, I was out in Vancouver at the Loden Hotel where the top two floors (including an amazing top floor penthouse) were roped off and served as the location for an event called The Artist Sanctuary. Musicians, TV personalities, and other VIPs were invited up to the sanctuary to enjoy drinks from the Grey Goose bar, listen to the Red Bull DJs, treated to private "bedroom performances" by a number of different performers, as well as receive a variety of other services and freebies. read more (147 words)

Saturday night is generally the biggest night of Canadian Music Week, which also means the most conflicts. I didn't research the night that well, but for me the major conflicts were The Indies vs. Everything Else and Young Galaxy vs. Library Voices. For the first conflict, I decided I would start at The Indies, mostly to see Hey Rosetta! perform, but also just to say hello to a few people. I previously decided that I wouldn't stay, though, and wanted to go see Library Voices (I haven't seen them before, but am digging their EP Hunting Ghosts). However, since I wanted to be at The Horseshoe for a couple of other bands and always enjoy seeing Young Galaxy, well, that's where I ended up. read more (1,043 words)

Before heading down to the illScarlett show, I managed to get out to The MOD Club and catch a set by the Arkells. I knew they were town for CMW '09, but didn't think I was going to get to see them otherwise. And after illScarlett I decided to head up to the Rancho Relaxo to see how Amos The Transparent were doing. read more (503 words)

Friday night of Canadian Music Week (er, I mean Canadian MusicFest) felt like it had two distinct parts for me even though it was divided up between three venues. I started the night out at The MOD Club, then buzzed down to the Sound Academy for the illScarlett show (the major portion of my night), and then headed back up to the Rancho Relaxo. I'll cover The MOD Club and Rancho Relaxo separately. As I arrived at the Sound Academy, Gene Simmons was being swarmed by young women while the bright lights for the video cameras followed him around. Rumour was that he was there to see the opening band Stereos, but given how much he's be talking about Down With Webster, I had to think he was there to see them as well. read more (450 words)

Our Lady Peace, Inward Eye, Hail The Villain, & More @ CMW '09 Thursday (Photos and Review)

Thursday night for Canadian MusicFest '09 was set out for me because I (happily) agreed to work for Coalition Entertainment photographing their entire showcase at the Rivoli. On one hand, it meant missing The Details, a band from Winnipeg that I've been hoping to see for a long time now. But on the other hand, it meant getting to see and photograph Our Lady Peace (billed as a Special Guest) up close and personal in a venue that holds maximum 200 people. read more (632 words)

Sloan, Songs From A Room, Inward Eye @ CMW '09 Wednesday (Photos and Review)

Canadian Music Week
is really only just getting started on Wednesday. Bands are still arriving in town, but a few venues run kick-off parties. My plan was to take it easy and just head out to The MOD Club to see Sloan with opening bands Will Curry and the Country French and Zeus. It didn't go quite according to plan, but I can't complain because it turned out to be a great opening night anyway. read more (461 words)

The connection I have to Bend Sinister is that they were the first band I ever set out to photograph after purchasing my DSLR camera in June 2006. I had heard them on the CBC Radio 3 Podcast and liked what I heard. They were playing Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe, so it was a good opportunity to try out my new camera due to the free entry and the generally camera-friendly nature of that night. Although I ended up photographing Pride Tiger first, it was actually Bend Sinister that took me there. read more (320 words)

Canadian Music Week '09 - Picks

Canadian Musicfest '09

Festivals have too many options. So many bands roll into town, all at the same time, which means I end up missing bands that I would otherwise love to see. Like last year, the biggest conflict during Canadian MusicFest '09 (apparently a separate name has been given to the festival portion of CMW) is on Saturday when The Indies draw media and photographers away from all the great bands out in the venues. My schedule is already partially set out for me this week because I've (happily) been hired to cover a few events. But you, you should grab yourself a wristband and hop from event to event like a happy-go-lucky fan. Or, another good strategy is to pick a good venue each night and stick there. read more (728 words)

Quick Shot Reviews: The Decemberists, Amos The Transparent, and The Parlor Mob

08-Mar-2009 07:00 PM Contributed by: pete Music Reviews

I've been looking for a reason to publish a short review on the new EP from Amos The Tranparent and after picking up an album by The Parlor Mob a couple of weeks ago, I had two CDs I felt compelled to write about. And then just earlier this week, I decided to listen to the new album from The Decemberists that was been sitting in my queue, and it ended up being the perfect album to complete a trio of quick shot reviews. read more (682 words)

Holler, Wild Rose! Prize Pack Contest

07-Mar-2009 03:00 AM Contributed by: pete Music News

You know what would go great after the crazy nights of Canadian Music Week? A night out at The Boat sipping some sort of strange tea while Holler, Wild Rose! works through their mixture of psychedelic-shoegaze-rock. Yes, this could be your life, and all you have to do is enter a contest. read more (104 words)
