The Parlor Mob is on a short tour, now just about a year after the release of their last album And You Were A Crow on March 11th last year. They stopped in Toronto for two nights, the first night supported by Vacuity and Murder City Sparrows. Even though Vacuity took spot #4 of my Top 10 Albums Of 2008, there often seems to be some sort of conflict when there are here playing in Toronto, so I hadn't been out to see them in a while. I hadn't previously heard anything by The Parlor Mob, but now I know I'll be listening to them much more frequently. read more (452 words)

Getting out to see Ben Kweller in the same week as Ben Folds meant two Bens in one week, but I'm still one Ben short of The Bens, a collaboration between Ben Folds, Ben Kweller, and Ben Lee that included an EP and a tour of Australia. If only Ben Lee was in town this week as well, I could've recreated The Bens 2003 tour in my head. Although I've been a fan of Ben Kweller for over 5 years now, this was my first time actually making it to one if his shows. read more (509 words)

It no small feat producing a debut full-length album, and celebrating that milestone usually draws friends and fans of the band that they've made along the way, which explains why the hip-hop/funk/rock group wordPEOPLE played to a jam-packed house for the release of their new album People's Eatery. read more (138 words)

Not too long before Ben Folds released his latest album, Way To Normal, he and his band recorded a bunch of ad-hoc songs and leaked them onto the internet, in effect creating a fake version of Way To Normal. When the album was released and I wanted to hear a few songs before purchasing, I downloaded a couple and gave them a listen. Sitting there listening to them, I remember thinking to myself "Wow, Ben sounds like he's really phoning it in this time around." Later, when I found out about the fake leaked songs, I went and listened to a few 30s clips on iTunes... at which point I bought the real Way To Normal. read more (502 words)

For the late half of last Thursday evening, I went to Sneaky Dee's in the hopes of catching a bit of Dinosaur Bones and the entire Hollerado set. I've seen Dinosaur Bones a few times now and always have a good time at their shows, but only really learned about Hollerado at the XM Holiday Party in December. I took home their Demo in A Bag EP, which got me hooked on the song Americanarama. This month they are touring, and playing every single night in February in what they call the Residency Tour. read more (460 words)

For last Thursday, the original plan was to head out to Sneaky Dee's for Hollerado and Dinosaur Bones, but it has come to the point where I don't like to miss Amos The Transparent when they play in Toronto. So I carefully timed my night, starting off at the Tattoo Rock Parlour to catch up with The Birds Of Wales, then stayed for a good portion of the set by Amos The Transparent before running out to Sneaky Dee's (coming next). read more (325 words)

For the month of February, The Dakota Tavern is the host to a Wednesday night residency of The Golden Dogs and their friends Zeus. Free Download: Vacuity "At The Command Of The Blanket Sky"

14-Feb-2009 08:00 PM Contributed by: pete Music News

The album that took spot #4 of my Top 10 Albums of 2008 was At The Command Of The Blanket Sky by a relatively unknown band called Vacuity. It's a carefully crafted piece of modern rock with masterful guitar work and melodies. Vacuity is a forward thinking band, and has embarked on a project they call Kill The Format whereby they are planning a series of digital only releases over the next 12 months. Greg Osbourn (guitar) says "A very important aspect to this is to ensure that we do not dilute the quality of releases." read more (88 words)

Just to give you an idea of what kind of night it was at The Horseshoe last Friday: At the beginning of the night I asked two guys near the stage who they were there to see, and they responded with "Well, all of the bands". That's what you get when you put the Arkells together with The Waking Eyes for a rock and roll double-header, and then add We Are The Take to open the show. read more (762 words)

What does the "F-U" in the F-U Awards stand for? Strangely, that's not something that is clearly defined on their website. Perhaps it stands for "Forensic Unit"? Or maybe it is somehow related to "Franklin University" in Ohio? But the awards show was put on by Punk-o-rama, Underground Operations, and Monster Energy Drinks, so that can't be right. Oh. Ooooh. I see now... clearly, it stands for "Frequently Underestimated", and nothing else. The party was hosted by Jason Mewes (from Jay and Silent Bob) with co-hosts Barry Taylor and J.D. from 102.1 The Edge. It was a night of loud music, skateboarding demonstrations, and awards. read more (558 words)
