Noah Mintz is possibly more well known for his CD mastering work with Lacquer Channel Mastering than he was with his previous band hHead. I don't mean that as a knock against hHead, what I'm saying is that if you check the liner notes of your CDs, you'll come across his name. Repeatedly. His credits include Broken Social Scene, Wintersleep, Die Mannequin, Constantines, Matt Mays & El Torpedo, Stars, The National, and on and on. As a result, he's very active in the music community, and so it was no surprise that the Supermarket was not only packed with friends but also many musicians when he held a CD release party for his new album, Names For Shapes That Don't Exist. read more (503 words)

Pale Young Gentlemen cover M.I.A.'s Paper Planes

07-Jan-2009 07:00 pm Contributed by: pete Music News

Falling into the category of "Unexpected Covers", the band Pale Young Gentlemen has recorded a version of Paper Planes, originally by M.I.A. I wrote a quick review of their album Black Forest (Tra La La) back in November, and included the song The Crook Of My Good Arm in my Best Of 2008 article, under the category 10 Hot Singles of 2008 (near the bottom). Their indie-pop-with-classical-instruments sound makes for an odd and slightly amusing translation of Paper Planes. read more (94 words)

The Best Of 2008

02-Jan-2009 05:00 pm Contributed by: pete Music News

I've got this thing where I have to wait until the following year before publishing the obligatory Best Of Last Year article. Part of it is that I need the time away from my full-time job compile the list, but I also need the reality of the new year to put the previous year into perspective. And so, once again, after a holiday season, a crazy new year's eve party with my friends, and a full new year of music just looming ahead of me, here are my picks from 2008. read more (772 words)

For the second year in a row, illScarlett has been my final concert of the year, and back in 2006 it was my second last show. Looking back, it's amazing that the show in 2006 turned into such a long relationship. I had actually gone to that show to photograph Hostage Life and ended up sticking around for illScarlett as well. I still remember that show quite well... how crazy the crowd was, how many people were up on side-stage, and just how the band surprised me with their live performance. read more (348 words)

Looking back at my website, it turns out that I started 2008 with a show by The Framework at The Horseshoe. And now, just a few weeks short of a year later, seemed like a good time to see them again. And with These Three Cities releasing a new EP the same night, it was definitely time to spend another night at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. read more (445 words)

I guess Dave Bookman from 102.1 decided to provide us a little holiday cheer this year by organizing a great line-up for the always free Tuesday Nu Music Nite at The Horseshoe. The night opened with Songs From A Room, a band I've been looking forward to seeing again, followed by Young Rival, then two of my favourite Canadian bands, the Arkells and We Are The Take. read more (752 words)

Pete's Pick: Hey Rosetta! / Into Your Lungs

Hey Rosetta! / Into Your Lungs

12 Track CD
© 2008 HR Music Inc.

I realize this is the time of year I'm supposed to be making Top 10 lists, but I refuse to do that until the year is over (simply because I include concerts, and my concert going schedule isn't done for the year). So I figured with all the last minute shopping going on, it was a good time to highlight the fact that Into Your Lungs by Hey Rosetta! would make a great present for anyone in your family, or even yourself. Produced by Hawksley Workman, this album contains brilliant guitar and piano-based rock laced with violin and cello used exactly right. This is definitely one of the best Canadian albums released this year.

The Verge is a station on XM Satellite Radio that focuses on Canadian emerging artists, and is quickly becoming the reason I'm might be interested in owning a satellite radio (provided the thing is portable). They've been running cool events at the Tattoo Rock Parlour, like The Verge Music Awards back in September, and this month they packed the house with a free holiday party that included a headlining performance by Moneen, and two amazing opening spots by the Arkells and Hollerado. read more (636 words)
