The Horseshoe turned 61 years-old last week, and not a year goes by without some sort of anniversary party. Unlike last year's 60th anniversary bash, this year was much closer to business-as-usual, but the venue did mark the occasion with a two night stay of Thornley as the headlining act, and The Ending, a band that includes Sergio Galli (yes, from Platinum Blonde), opening the night. read more (435 words)

After seeing Hey Rosetta! put on one of the best shows I've seen this year at The Horseshoe on November 19th, I was looking forward to seeing another show sometime, but with their schedule taking them to Australia in January, I didn't expect to see them performing in Toronto again until maybe February at the earliest. However, the Third Estate, a music merchandising company, decided to host a holiday party last week, with both Dinosaur Bones and Hey Rosetta! playing for the attendees, providing me with one more opportunity to see Hey Rosetta! perform before year end. read more (453 words)

It's no secret that Gene Simmons has been in Toronto recently, scouting bands for the relaunch of his record label Simmons Records (in conjunction with Universal). Last week he was out taking over various venues in the early evening to view band showcases specifically for this purpose. I hear that the showcase with Down With Webster went well, and it has been reported that he is looking to sign them on. I was out early in the evening at the Tattoo Rock Parlour to see the showcase by Paper Lions and Bleeker Ridge. read more (180 words)

Although I run into the guys from The Midway State every now and then, I've really only seen them perform once before, on the Saturday Afternoon of Virgin Festival this year. It was memorable, even among all the seriously great sets that were played that weekend, and last week seemed like a good time to get out and see them again. If I was forced to sum up their show in four words or less, I think I would have to go with: Big hair, earnest music. read more (196 words)

Pete's Pick: Arkells / Jackson Square

Arkells / Jackson Square

12 Track CD
© 2008 Dine Alone Music Inc.

If you've been reading my blog recently, this Pete's Pick probably goes without saying, but I still felt like I should say it: The Arkells are a great live act, and this debut full-length album backs it up. The album is [presumably] named after the Jackson Square mall in their hometown of Hamilton, which acts as a bit of a cultural hub, and has a connection to Copps Coliseum (often used as a concert venue). The tracks on the CD include re-recorded versions all five songs from their Deadlines EP, as well as seven more new tracks to fill it out. The newer and older material blend perfectly into an album that should be listened to in its entirety. My current favourites are The Choir and John Lennon, along side of all my other favourites Tragic Flaw, Oh The Boss Is Coming!, No Champagne Socialist, and Ballad Of Hugo Chavez. And Abigail. And Blueprint. You get the idea.

It's not often that absolutely everything comes together in a band: Brilliant musicianship, excellent vocals, interesting compositions, strong stage presence, and a set of songs that clearly demonstrates it all. But Hey Rosetta! has all of that. It's bands like this that keep me going out to the shows, that keep my camera in my hand, and confirm that the Canadian music industry is something that the world should care about. read more (564 words)

It's been just a few weeks short of a year since I last saw the local independent band THe WitHouts, and in that time they've written and recorded an EP's worth of tunes. I was told that the EP was recorded in only a single weekend, but it was produced by Ian Blurton (of C'Mon) and mastered by Noah Mintz, so there were some quality people behind the scenes. I've been digging Over The Border, track four of five on the EP, mostly because of the super-catchy chorus... and so I decided to join them at Sneaky Dee's to celebrate the release of the EP. read more (129 words)

As far as Canadian rock goes, Sam Roberts is certainly one of the leaders. The band has been nominated for numerous Juno awards and has ended up winning a few, the most recent being for Video Of The Year in 2007. I became a fan the first time I heard Brother Down, and continued to be a fan through their three full-length album releases. This past week, the band played four shows in five days at The Music Hall, a very cool thing to do as compared to booking just one show at a larger venue. I was there for the first show of the four nights, on Tuesday. read more (275 words)
