Since the beginning of this century, Kings Of Leon have been creating music, but they've been together much longer than that simply because the band is comprised of three brothers and a first cousin. They released their first album in 2003, but when I look back, it was actually April 2005 that I first added their music to my collection, not too long after the release of their second album Aha Shake Heartbreak, their album that remained my favourite until this September when they released Only By The Night. read more (332 words)

There are few concerts I've been to, if any, that included more musician-based support in the audience than I noticed at the Matt Mays & El Torpedo show last week. Everywhere I turned, there were people I knew that were either musicians themselves, or in the music business. This is important because gaining that much respect in the music industry just can't come easily, yet Matt Mays seems to have achieved exactly that. read more (696 words)

After having an absolutely amazing time at the Matt Mays & El Torpedo / Arkells show on Thursday night (more on that next), I decided to stop by the Tattoo Rock Parlour to see if I could catch part of the set by Birds Of Wales. I made it mostly in time, missing only the first three or four songs, so this ended up being my third time seeing Birds Of Wales perform at the Tattoo Rock Parlour. read more (186 words)

CD Reviews: Pale Young Gentlemen, Paper Lions, THe WitHouTs

06-Nov-2008 02:00 AM Contributed by: pete Music Reviews
Quite a few CDs have passed through my hands since I last published three short reviews earlier this year. (Oh man, I look back and see that was in February! Okay, yes, it's been a while.) More often than not, a CD will get me interested in photographing a band because, after all, it is the photography and live shows that really draw me in. But here are a few more short reviews of submitted CDs that I've decided to add to my permanent collection.

In this volume: Pale Young Gentlemen, Paper Lions, and THe WitHouTs. read more (554 words)

If you have the patience to go back through the archives here, you'll discover that occasionally I'll head out to Dave Bookman's Nu Music Night at The Horseshoe. Sometimes it's because I hear a rumour about a special guest, sometimes it's to see a specific band, but other times I head out just to just hear some new music on a week when I'm not booked up. Last Tuesday, I happened to be driving in my car while Bookie was on air at 102.1 plugging the show, and I always like being at The Horseshoe... so a few hours later, there I was. read more (284 words)

Hi-Hat Recordings is a Toronto-based independent record label and Dan Wolovick, who is the promoter for the Rancho Relaxo, has recently taken over general operations of the label as well. To generate interest in their roster, a second compilation CD was put together and released (the first one was released a while ago). I'm not sure how excited people get about compilation CDs, especially when they are produced for marketing purposes, but there's a twist to this one... all the CDs come in a one-of-a-kind CD case created by one of many contributors that hand-make them during an "art party". It's a cool idea. To celebrate, five bands played over the course of the evening, although I was only there for three of them: After The Weather, Gypsophilia, and Make Your Exit. read more (251 words)

The Secret Machines are the creators of one of my favourite albums of this decade with their 2004 release Now Here Is Nowhere. They've been through Toronto at least a few times since then, but each time they've been here, there has been some major conflict that prevented me from getting out to the show. This time around was no different in terms of a conflict, with The CASBY Awards happening on the same night. And although I felt awkward about missing the CASBY Awards (especially with all those excellent Canadian bands playing), I decided it was finally time to get out and see the Secret Machines. read more (577 words)

Given that I included Okkervil River in my top 10 concerts of 2007, it should be no surprise that I was eager to see them again when the opportunity arose. They passed through Toronto in April this year, opening for The New Pornographers, but I was unable to get out to that show, so I waited in hopes that they would return later in the year to headline their own show. The release of a new album, The Stand Ins, on September 9th spawned a tour with a stop in Toronto on October 12. Perfect. read more (654 words)

Toronto has pockets of like-minded independent bands, much like I imagine the music scene in any city to be, so when it became time for local indie band Oh No Forest Fires to release a new CD, they invited two bands from the scene that just made sense: Black Hat Brigade, and Dinosaur Bones. read more (490 words)

To kick off Indie Week 2008, an opening night party (presented by IndieSolo.com) was held at Tattoo Rock Parlour and featured five independent acts: Fred (from Ireland), Vesta Varro (also from Ireland and winners of Indie Week 2007), Saigon Hookers, The Dunes, and Larry Bagby. Now in its 5th year, Indie Week is gaining momentum with a number of foreign independent acts as well many local bands participating. One of the most notable differences between Indie Week and other Toronto festivals is that Indie Week has a battle-of-the-bands aspect to it in the sense that one band wins a prize (including a press photo shoot by mrchgirl and a photographer that you may already be familiar with). And the winner of Indie Week 2008 is... read more (577 words)
