I've run into Geoff Star (guitar) and Roddy Soul (vocals) from Rebel Emergency more times off stage than on, but even so, I have seen them perform once at an Artist Sanctuary event and once when they opened for illScarlett. I like a few of their songs from their self-titled EP released in 2008, but more recently they released their debut full-length album Love Ain't Free. I hadn't heard any of the new material until a few days before their Rock Your Stockings Christmas Bash at the Sound Academy. read more (534 words)

Top 50 Albums of the Decade (10 to 1)

31-Dec-2009 09:30 PM Contributed by: pete Music News

It turns out a decade is a long time. So many things can change over those ten years, and with so many advances in technology and adjustments in everyday living, our perceptions change while culture reshapes. Did the creation of the MP3 player change the way I listen to music? Absolutely, but it also changed the way in which I discover music, and ultimately changed the type of music I listen to. Podcasts provided me with musical options, and the plethora of recommendation machines out there now allow me to follow musical paths far more easily. Looking at my top 10, I think it covers my decade of life pretty well. Some of the albums in this list shaped my listening patterns, some are discoveries made as a direct result of this blog, and some expose the foundation of my musical taste. As you read through it, try to think about how your musical tastes have changed over the past ten years. read more (1,076 words)

Top 50 Albums of the Decade (20 to 11)

I'm down to the top 20 albums of the decade, and so here are numbers 20 through 11. I have a feeling that this part of the list might start to deviate from what people were expecting (if it hasn't already). Either way, I hope you're checking out any albums that you were previously unfamiliar with, even if that means just listening to a 30 second sample to see if it's something you think you might like. read more (893 words)

Just about the time I started putting together my list of Top 50 Albums Of The Decade, I found out that Hollerado was going to be playing Bookie's Nu Music Nite at the Horseshoe Tavern. I missed them the last time they were in Toronto, and since then they've won the $250,000 Big Money Shot contest, and subsequently did a tour through China. In fact, they played a gig in Hong Kong on December 20th, and still somehow managed to get to the Horseshoe on time on December 22nd for Bookie's Annual Holiday Bash. It was after I discovered Hollerado was playing that I found out the night was going to be headlined by Arkells playing a set of Motown covers. Excellent combination! read more (648 words)

Ten more albums for my Top 50 of The Decade. This group of ten falls into the middle of the pack, but this is not like a classroom. There's no bell curve here. Every album in this list of my Top 50 means something to me. read more (894 words)

The Verge XM - Thank God It's Not Another Xmas Party (Photos)

24-Dec-2009 07:30 PM Contributed by: pete Concert Photos

For the second year in a row, I headed out to The Verge XM holiday party. Last year was a pretty wild party at the Tattoo Rock Parlour with Moneen headlining, and this year was similar in many ways, but instead took place across the road at the Velvet Underground. I don't have XM radio, but I recently signed up for a 14-day trial because they have recently released an iPhone application that allows you to stream XM to your phone, no satellite receiver needed. Very cool. There are about 2 or 3 stations I've been listening to, but The Verge is by far the one I listen to most. They play all Canadian bands and the rotation is excellent. The line-up for Thank God It's Not Another Xmas Party was a good representation of the station content: Dinosaur Bones, Still Life Still, Meligrove Band, and The Junction. read more (153 words)

Top 50 Albums of the Decade (50 to 41)

17-Dec-2009 04:30 AM Contributed by: pete Music News

Creating this Top 50 Albums of the Decade list was more of a personal activity than anything else. I have lots of listening statistics on last.fm and iTunes, but those didn't start until late 2003, and even then, making lists like this has to include a certain amount of emotional input as well. I actually thought it would be difficult to come up with 50 albums, but after my first pass through the decade of music I had almost 100 albums that I considered among my favourites. Scaling it back to just 50 turned out to be the difficult part. I know I will regret cutting some of those albums from the list, and I've questioned the order I ended up with repeatedly, but I finally just decided to stop and put it out in front of you. Below you will find #50 through #41. read more (946 words)

It was a strange feeling waking up Sunday morning after the incredible show Weezer put on the night before, pretty much still buzzing from the concert, to find out that Rivers Cuomo (vocals, guitar) had been a part of a tour bus accident en route from Toronto to Boston. At first, the reports made the injuries sound minor, but then when a blog post on the Weezer MySpace page showed up, with photos included, it looked and sounded more serious. Another post let us know that Rivers sufferred internal injuries (that now appear to be healing well), along with with a hurt right leg. However, Rivers' right leg wasn't actually hurt during the accident, it turns out it was hurt during the performance at Toronto's Air Canada Centre during his Lady Gaga impression in the stands... but let me go back to the beginning. read more (875 words)
