Whenever these festivals start, I always have this crazy idea that I can see everything everywhere, and then the first day usually puts me in my place. But Thursday of NXNE was run so well, with everything more or less starting on time, that the night went according to plan... meaning that I actually managed to get out and see nine bands play, although for two of them I only saw about 3 songs each. Most of the bands I saw on Thursday were amazing and I ended up having a really excellent time during this memorable night. In fact, Thursday was the definition of why I love NXNE. Getting around was pretty crazy, though, and not to be repeated... so I didn't see nearly as many bands on Friday or Saturday. read more (1,305 words)

NXNE is officially over now, which means it's time for me to go back and, using the power of digital photography, figure out what happened to me during the past four days. From what I can tell, it all started back on Wednesday night with the NXNE Opening Party. Moe Berg, formally of The Pursuit of Happiness, and his band Monte Forte entertained the party with a series of cover songs. And although the majority of people were out on the huge deck enjoying the beautiful and cool evening, the audio was being pumped through speakers outside along with video of the performance on a big screen TV. read more (156 words)

There was something so brilliant about the Death Cab For Cutie show line-up. I guess sometimes these things just come together right. Both Young Galaxy and Rogue Wave were in my Top 10 Albums of last year, and Young Galaxy also held a spot in my Top 10 Concerts for the year. And although Stars didn't quite make my list, I own and have been enjoying In Our Bedroom After The War. All these bands on the same bill? Pure genius. read more (976 words)

What is a Snorri, and why does it need a fundraiser? As it turns out, Snorri is actually a student exchange program for young people of Icelandic origin, and so the funds collected from this night are going toward the program. In a way it made sense that I ended up at this event, not because I'm or Icelandic origin or anything, but because I've had a lifelong obsession with the idea of travelling to Iceland that started back when I was a kid and liked to look at maps. Aside from not being Icelandic in anyway, I also fall (way) outside of the exchange program's definition of "young", so I'm really not at all eligible, but at least for this night I was able to imagine the sights of Reykjavik while listening to some Canadian music played by bands with some sort of Icelandic connection. The evening featured Sigrun Stella, Lindy (of Major Maker), Infighter, and Mackenzie Kristjón. read more (143 words)

Pete's NXNE Picks

09-Jun-2008 12:00 pm Contributed by: pete Music News

This is the week of NXNE, where Toronto is host to an amazing variety of independent music and music-related films, from both Canada and abroad. This year, they've added a bunch of outdoor performances, including a whole pile of free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square, as well as more NXNE Extra shows with bands like My Morning Jacket, illScarlett, and Rough Trade. I've been doing some rough planning, but still haven't really figured out exactly where I'm going to end up. read more (578 words)

Back in Toronto after a tour in the U.K., and just before starting a tour with Sloan that will take them through the Eastern U.S., The Golden Dogs played two nights in a row at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern. This is a band not to miss when they play here in Toronto, and I wish I could've been for there both nights, but Saturday was out, which meant Friday night was the ticket for me. read more (626 words)

Pete's Pick: The Kooks

I featured The Kooks as Pete's Pick in January 2007 for their debut album Inside In/Inside Out, and it should suffice to say that their recent release, Konk, is even better. Their debut album had a few songs that brought me back for more, but this album is pretty much the whole thing, including the highlights: Mr. Maker, Do You Wanna, Love It All, Sway, Shine On, and Down To Market. They are playing the Koolhaus in Toronto tonight (June 4th) in what looks to be a sold-out show.

In case you don't follow entomology, a zygiella is a spider. But Zygiella (with a capital 'Z') is more of a strategy that includes a unique website, a podcast, and series of showcases. The website shares some of the goals of my website here, including the desire to promote and support independent music, but it is more focused around finding and learning about local-Toronto talent and it is fairly unique is the way you navigate. Since Zygiella is hosted at the Rancho Relaxo, the venue where I've been spending a few good Friday nights recently, I decided to check out the Rancho on a Thursday instead to see what Zygiella IV had to offer. read more (494 words)

I accidentally caught a short set by Birds Of Wales at the Supermarket just a week before this full show at Tattoo Rock Parlour, a show that I had already planned on being at for both for Birds Of Wales and the The Last True Gentlemen. These two bands were scheduled for the end and beginning of the night, respectively, and with a set by These Three Cities in between. read more (467 words)

A great line-up is easy to spot, and so from the moment the announcement was made that Paul Price, The Beautiful Unknown, and The Dunes were all playing Tattoo Rock Parlour on May 22nd, I planned on being there. Of course, if you saw my last article, you know that I skipped out on the night to catch We Are The Take, the unfortunate side-effect being that I ended up missing the entire set by The Beautiful Unknown. But now is as good a time as any to introduce you to Tom E, a good friend of mine who is often out at the shows with me. You see, he stayed at Tattoo for that set and even took photos. Tom and I will be working together during NXNE to bring even more coverage, so think of this as a practice round. read more (388 words)
