Sometimes a Sunday night full of metal is what I need. It was heavy, it was loud, and it was a little sweaty. It put me in the right frame of mind for Monday.

Just in case it hasn't become obvious, I'll say it: The Golden Dogs have become my current favourite Toronto-based live act. Friday night was the third time I've seen their show, the first time being in July 2006 and the second on the Saturday night of CMW 2007. As I've mentioned, they just have everything I'm looking for in a concert: Great music, tight compositions, passion, and connection between band members that just can't be faked. It's a show that produces adrenaline. In fact, after seeing their performance of the song 1984, one fan pushed his way to the front to pound on the stage and yell out is appreciation, then turned to the fans behind him and screamed "Now that's how you fucking rock out!" He is so right - it pretty much doesn't get any better than that. read more (181 words)

Ron Lopata and John (JK) Kanakis are both Juno award winners and have worked with many Canadian artists, and after spending many years as session players and producers, they have now spent three years creating and organizing Year Of The Monkey 68, a project that brings together many of their favourite Canadian vocalists and lyricists. Organizing the recording is one thing, but pulling all these artists together for a single performance is something else entirely. Even with so many performers, the night was kept at a fast moving pace and was constantly interesting, with appearances from Kobe James, Andy Stochansky, Haydain Neale (Jacksoul), Tara Slone, Mike Eastick, Jully Black, Lindy, Joel Parisian, Simon Wilcox, Lindi Ortega, and Tomi Swick, all in addition to a full band that included Ron and John. read more (122 words)

Last Friday, Healey's Roadhouse hosted a Hotboxxx Music Showcase with Eleven Minutes, VASLAV, and Blind Dog Circus, among other bands. It almost had the feel of a Tuesday night at The Horseshoe, with a slightly wider range of music styles. Despite the sound being a bit rough, the bands played some decent sets. read more (107 words)

While many photographers and reviewers were out covering the Arcade Fire at Massey Hall on Wednesday night, I headed out to Lee's Palace to photograph Tapes 'n Tapes. I published Tapes 'n Tapes as Pete's Pick on August 30th, 2006 and their album The Loon took spot #4 in my Top 10 of 2006. As a result, I went into this concert heavily biased because I already know their music and listen to it regularly. It also meant that I had some high expectations. read more (257 words)

Staylefish is a group out of London, Ontario with band members that come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Their music is based on a reggae framework with a rock music overlay, which is why they fit in sharing the stage with bands like Ill Scarlett. These photos were taken in February before one of their shows at Lee's Palace. In case you're wondering, the band name is derived from a boarding move called a stalefish (it's when you grab the the backside of your board with your back hand in front of your back foot). read more (7 words)

The Silversun Pickups have a great formula, whether it's on purpose or not I'm unsure, but it works like this: They've produced a catchy, radio-friendly album to get people into their music and out to the concerts, and then they follow-up on stage with a surprisingly powerful and decidedly rougher-than-in-studio performance. Brian Aubert (vocals, guitar) took the stage with full-force playing up to the audience almost immediately. His vocals stressing to the point of purposefully-raunchy, but all within the bounds of good alternative rock. read more (146 words)

The NXNE 2007 Press Conference included a list of announcements, tasty Steamwhistle Pilsner, small foodstuffs on platters, and, yes, it even included Dave Foley's nipples. But no one threw Dave a string of beads, even though he deserved them. For more info see: NXNE 2007. read more (2 words)

The Hylozoists are an ensemble made up of a variable number of musicians and that play almost entirely instrumental pieces. The music is classically inspired post-rock fronted by Paul Aucoin and his vibraphone and xylophone, a violin, a pair of drum kits, a bass, a guitar, and all flanked by keyboards on either side. It's certainly not your typically indie music night out, but it is an experience due to the dense music and mesmerizing play of the mallets on the vibraphone. read more (290 words)
